Thank you for checking out the deck, legendofa, it's the successor to my Windgrace & Prosper decks.

When I first put together G-G&S, most of the decks I saw were Ninjutsu focused. I def got the sense that they were a means of doing Ninjutsu without the reputation of Yuriko & OG Satoru; both of which I've played against numerous times in my playgroups.

Am I alone in thinking that this deck should have a plethora of devoid eldrazi creatures in it?

They would only be able to be blocked by artifact creatures since there is no possible way for a creature to share a color.

Crow_Umbra I'm sure there's a few really good ways the build could go, ninjutsu was just my first thought. Your Ognis deck actually sparked the idea for that "partner" pairing.

legendofa, I run both Goro-Goro and Satoru, & Ognis, the Dragon's Lash as commanders. I play G-G&S more as quick aggro/self-bouncing threats, & don't use any Ninjutsu.

Both decks share a few overlapping cards, but they could make for a fun partnership.

Just thought of Goro-Goro and Satoru + Ognis, the Dragon's Lash. Attack with haste, make treasures, ninjutsu down something scary, make dragons. Probably not going to pull it together, so I'll put the idea out there if anyone is looking for something fast and chaotic.

Sakaizokan, Ravenous Colony

Legendary Creature - Insect Wall

Defender

When Sakaizokan enters the battlefield, create X 1/1 red insect creature tokens named Fire Ant. They have ": This creature deals 1 damage to any target."

Whenever you are attacked, Sakaizokan deals X damage divided as you choose among attacking creatures equal to the number of insects you control.

6/6

Dragonlair Spider, Hornet Queen, Hornet Nest, Ant Queen, Beacon of Creation, Carrion, Grist, the Hunger Tide, Amzu, Swarm's Hunger, Izoni, Thousand-Eyed, Living Hive, Broodhatch Nantuko, Nest of Scarabs, Xira, the Golden Sting

I mean are you kidding me? And this isn't even all of them, and not even all of the best ones in these colors. Not to mention all of the all of the black punishment effects, all of the red ETB damage effects or all of the green propagation effects.

Your challenge is to make another interesting Commander, and showcase several cards that would be in their deck starting precon deck.

Remember this is a precon deck, so cards should largely be between $1 and $3 each, with maybe two or three $10 max cards.

And if you look, yes I did adhere to my own rule with Beacon of Creation, Grist, the Hunger Tide and Amzu, Swarm's Hunger being the expensive ones in the list.

Is kicker considered a part of the casted spells mana cost, and can cards that help reduce the cost of or help pay for the cost of a spell be used to pay for the kicker costs?

In particular I'm curious about how Eldrazi Temple works with Wastescape Battlemage. If I declare intent to pay the kicker costs for Battlemage as I'm casting it, can I use Eldrazi Temple's second mana ability to help pay for the colorless man portion of its kicker cost?

Thanks in advance!

seshiro_of_the_orochi on Why Have There Been So …

That's obviously objectively correct. She's not an enabler, she's a payoff. But what she does by this is she basically unlocks a truckload of defensive effects that mostly couldn't be used at all without her helming the deck. The closest comparison for the strategy could be Rhoda, Geist Avenger and Timin, Youthful Geist. Timin taps down things and Rhoda benefits from it, but the pair is rather weak compared to Hylda. Timin is the enabler, but he needs to be expensive manawise to not be restrictive.

Let's imagine Hylda had an Opposition effect on herself. Her triggered ability had to be a lot weaker so she couldn't go "pseudo infinite" with herself, and then the deck would be very different. You'd propably play a go-wide strategy relying on Hylda to make room for big attacks. That's not a defensive play style.

This is quite a long comment already. The most important part is this:

What she does is she unlocks a truckload of defensive effects that mostly couldn't be used at all without her payoff ability. That way, while her ability is a payoff, her effect on the cards she plays is she enables them to be played. As such, she enables defensive play and thus definitely can be called a defensive card.

In addition to the excellent points legendofa already made, anti-countermagic cards exist like Veil of Summer, Carnage Tyrant, Cavern of Souls etc.

Of course playing smartly/strategically, as already mentioned above, gives countermagic a rough time - but failing that there are these cards available for a blunter-approach.

Hi. Thanks for the comments on my desk Magda of the Maskwood [[Guide]] Updated for MKC. I was checking your build of Magda out and saw some cards that I think might fit your build.

  1. Ingenious Artillerist - Every time one or more artifacts enter the battlefield under your control you burn everyone's faces for the number of artifacts. This seems like it would quickly get grow to a ton of damage with your damage boosting cards. If nothing else it can be a backup to Reckless Fireweaver.
  2. Spiteful Repossession - With damage boosters out this can turn being slightly behind in land to a huge windfall of treasures. If each opponent has 1 more land then you and you have one damage doubler out you would deal 2 damage to each opponent and make 6 treasure.
  3. Magmatic Force - Every upkeep, including your opponents, do 3 damage minimum to whatever you want. With your damage boosters it will often be more. Burn their face or that annoying value creature that never attacks. If you have Magmatic Galleon and/or Spiteful Banditry out you can also get so treasure for more Magda triggers.
  4. Descent into Avernus - Generates increasingly large amounts of treasure tokens for the board; however, I would say you are best positioned to use them. Besides given treasures to your opponents it is also a bit dangerous cause the damage it deals applies to you as well. If nothing else this will accelerate your games by increasing the mana available and lowering life totals.

legendofa on How Are Red, Black, and …

Red and green deal with counterspells by outpacing them. Red in particular tends to use high speed and redundancy to its advantage. If one spell gets countered, two others that do the same thing are right behind them. Green can recycle spells and has a good selection of "can't be countered" spells. Most counterspells are 1-for-1 removal, and simply casting more spells than the blue player can counter is a valid way to get around them.

As a more advanced version of this, bluffing, counter baiting, and sequencing can help key spells avoid being countered. These are difficult skills to master, but important in high-end competition.

DemonDragonJ on How Are Red, Black, and …

legendofa, I certainly understand that, but how should red and green, the enemy colors of blue, be able to deal with counterspells, in that case?

Also, I very much believe that both Worldfire and Bearer of the Heavens are color pie breaks (I shall forgive Obliterate and Decree of Annihilation due to their ages), so I definitely can see your perspective, on this matter.

Alearin on Magda of the Maskwood [[Guide]] …

Saljen, your deck Treasure, Dwarves, and Dragon's; OH MY! definitely takes Magda, Brazen Outlaw in a different direction, with it focus on damage doublers/triplers and ping damage but not using infinite combos to do it. Biggest downside I could see is none of the doublers/triplers are directly searchable by Magda.

As for your suggestions:

  1. Hammer of Nazahn - Good card in equipment focused decks and giving Magda indestructible is always good, but to me it is a build up card. It does not impact the game greatly when it hits the field by itself. You either need to have the mana open to cast an impactful equipment, 5 more treasure to search for one, or wait until you have either of the above. That being said Hammer of Nazahn not being in my maybeboard was an oversite that has been rectified.
  2. Magmatic Galleon - I feel the cost is too high so I would not want to see it in my hand to hard cast. That means I would be using a precious Magda activation to bring this out and I am not sure it is worth it, in most cases vs getting a combo piece.
  3. Mycosynth Lattice - Does this work like Maskwood Nexus? Maskwood says "The same is true for creature spells you control and creature cards you own that aren't on the battlefield.". Where as Mycosyth says "All cards that aren't on the battlefield, spells, and permanents are colourless.' I take that to mean in the deck cards are colorless, but do not become artifacts until the enter the battlefield. Which would mean you do not get to search for an extra cards since they are not artifacts yet.
  4. Sculpting Steel - This is a card I like and have tried in my desk, but have moved it the maybeboard as a card to keep in mind for alternative builds. It is not in the main deck because to me it feels like a 'win-more' card. Is doubling the triggers you mentioned powerful? Yes it is. However, if I am getting even one of those to trigger I am probably winning the game. I don't need to double the triggers to win.
  5. Spiteful Banditry - This is a card that I am not sure how to evaluate. My current thoughts are it is not worth adding, despite the lack in interaction in the deck. My thoughts shortly after it came out, "I debated putting this in the main deck, there is 1 thing that kept it out. The worst sentence to see on a card in Magic, in my opinion, "This ability triggers only once each turn". If that wasn't on this card it is an auto include variable boardwipe that gives me treasures for killing my opponents creatures. As it stands the best case scenario is to play it when you have no creatures out or the creatures with the highest toughness and wipe your opponents board and get 1 treasure. There might be metas this is more useful in, which is why it was included in the maybe section. I doubt I will ever slot it into the main deck; unless, I am completely misunderstanding the card, since at most 1 treasure per opponent's turn seems unlikely and slow."
  6. Crime Novelist - Another card that I am not sure on my evaluation of. It is currently in the maybeboard of this deck since I can't convince myself of what to swap it with. I have played games with it in my deck and had it be great, allowing me to search for Helm of the Host and then equip it, or search for one combo piece and cast the other from my hand or even just drop a big dragon on the field on turn 3 or 4. However, I have had just as many games where it doesn't seem to do much. That said I think I should try to find a way to get it in my deck without cutting lands or interaction, so if you have a suggestion for what to swap with it I am open to ideas.
  7. Steel Hellkite - I just replaced this card for Cavern-Hoard Dragon. While I had it my deck for removal as you suggest I replaced it for something that is more likely to get get the treasure I need to combo out. Given that the deck aims to win on 2-4 activations of Magda, I felt getting treasures off Cavern-Hoard Dragon was the better play then paying for Steel Hellkite's effect and hoping it does damage to remove a problem piece.

    Desertwalk

When Range Rover enters the battlefield, distribute a total number of +1/+1 and / or -1/-1 counters equal to the number of deserts in play among all creatures.

    3/3

legendofa on How Are Red, Black, and …

Because, at least in Mark Rosewater 's view (and he really is the one in charge of this stuff), black, red, and green shouldn't get counterspells at all, at any level of niche-ness or utility. The linked post specifically covers black counterspells, but the same reasoning applies.

Just as colors have a handful of things they excel at, they should have a handful of things they can't do. There's some discussion on the boundary between "should only be able to do very inefficiently and only on rare occasions" and "shouldn't be able to do at all," and I admit to coming down on both sides on a case-by-case basis. But the intent is to keep the colors distinct and balanced at some level, so that no single color can do everything.

RiotRunner789 on How Are Red, Black, and …

No, as long as they stay within certain boundaries. Green has a good history of countering activated abilities.

Dash Hopes is a bit out there, but the life loss is on theme.

All the red counter spells are all anti-blue or pure chaos.

I enjoy a nonue counterspell that are narrow in scope and fit their color. Other colors should have more ability to affect spells on the stack rather than everything else.

DemonDragonJ on How Are Red, Black, and …

In this post, Mark Rosewater states that red, black, and green counterspells break the color pie, but I fail to see how that is the case, since those counterspells are so narrow and conditional that they are useful only in very niche circumstances.

What does everyone else say about this? Why are red, black, and green counterspells color pie breaks?

Not sure if I'm missing something, but Sram, Senior Edificer seems good in here. Battlemage's Bracers can double your Commander's ability, Haste might come up idk. Lae'zel, Vlaakith's Champion can add an extra counter each time you add a counter. Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain will probably draw you some cards if you resolve her. Shorikai, Genesis Engine is more card draw to consider, it also makes pilots that can drive your vehicles if you're desperate.

If you can find anything that lets you put -1/-1 counters on opponent's stuff it would be very useful with your Proliferate abilities, Contagion Engine is a good example of what I mean, this starts small but fairly quickly will wipe out everything your opponents control. Choking Fumes could be an interesting surprise, especially if you can proliferate a few times after the spell resolves, possibly turning an attack against you into a bloodbath. Retribution would normally be pretty bad, but here you for sure kill one of the two creatures right away, and the other one will die quickly enough due to Proliferate.

It's a bit 'weird', but if you get out Nin, the Pain Artist out with your Commander you can pay 2UR to ping your Commander for 2 (which won't kill them) and draw 2 cards, that seems like an interesting floor. In a pinch you can remove a creature an opponent controls. If you have a bigger creature you can draw more, the price is surprisingly low since it can cost you no other resources.

I always love decks with Dwarves, such an underappreciated tribe! I have a soft spot for Dwarven Miner and Dwarven Blastminer, two very similar cards that can cripple some decks, I have essentially eliminated an otherwise problematic player by just resolving a Dwarf and locking them out of non-Basics for a measly 2R per turn.

    Cool deck!

Gidgetimer on Gitrog, Ravenous ride and MDFC

You will not be able to put the back face lands into the battlefield off of The Gitrog, Ravenous Ride.

The Gitrog, Ravenous Ride allows you to "put land cards from your hand onto the battlefield" not "play lands". The difference between the wording is slight, but important.

In all zones except the stack and the battlefield MDFCs only have the characteristics of their front face. MDFCs like Disciple of Freyalise  Flip can not be put onto the battlefield from The Gitrog, Ravenous Ride's ability. MDFCs that are lands on both sides allow you to only put the front face in off of The Gitrog, Ravenous Ride (Darkbore Pathway  Flip could be put into play, but Slitherbore Pathway  Flip could not).

If an effect were allowing you to play lands from somewhere besides your hand, or allowing you to play extra lands then you can put any face of a MDFC that is a land into the battlefield.

    Peer into the Void

    Legendary Enchantment

Whenever you Cascade for the first time each turn, you may instead cast a card that that costs up to mana more.

I sat, looking into the void, the void looked back. Suddenly, I heard a familiar voice. “Don't go back to sleep."

Quote is from Here. It isn't my cup of tea in terms of writing or story telling, but it had a nice quote I could borrow from for the purposes of the card.

So by making it cost MV7, it triggers Zhulodok, Void Gorger.

Basically what this means is, if you cast an Ulamog's Crusher, instead of being able to Cascade into something MV 7 or less, you could cast another MV 8, or even an MV 9 card such as Void Winnower.

The catch is that this only works on the first instance of Cascade each turn.

So now that Outlaws of Thunder Junction have introduced us to the whimsy of Cactusfolk, make their first Planeswalker.
