Maybeboard

After taking a moment to look around, you realize that there is only one item on the menu:

..."Gyoza"...

(Logistically speaking, they cannot ever received any shipments, so...) What kind of meat & flour could they possibly be serving in a back-alley the middle of a giant mega-metropolis? (The only possible answer: Rat meat— seasoned with god-knows-what, wrapped in a Roach-flour dumpling, and then fried in gutter-oil...)

Are they absolutely disease-ridden? (Compleat-ly...) Are they prepared in a sanitary environment, and/or at least being thoroughly cooked to well-done? (Ha! Of course not...)

But for some reason... They must be delicious, because everyone just immediately devours them without a second-thought...

Every... Single... Time...

There must be— something about that Glistening Oil sauce...

You order a round for the boys...

Ichor Rats' ETB-ability triggers immediately—if not sooner, and gives everyone at the table a Poison Counter...

i.e. Preemptively— with Enchantments...

"...from your graveyard to the battlefield"— Classic Reanimation...

Or, "...return target creature... from your graveyard to your hand"— to be cast again...

Repeat steps 1-3 until everyone is dead!!!

There are technically two flaws to the above plan...

  1. To execute exactly would technically result in a draw due to everyone dying at the exact same time...

  2. Anyone who thinks that three other opponents are going to allow this process to repeat 9 times, unmolested, is rather delusional...

Therefore, it is necessary to not only overcome the symmetrical nature of Ichor Rats' ETB-ability, but to quickly gain the advantage against the other opponents that are trying win as well..

Intially, there were only two sources of Proliferate available in Pauper from the original 'Scars of Mirrodin' block:

The release of 'Phyrexia: All is One' saw the printing of three more sources:

To resolve any of the above (after inital the initial Poison Counter) is to quasi-permanently break parity and have the opponents be one step closer to 10 Poison Counters.

If all of that wasn't enough, (ONE) took it a step farther with a pair of Pauper-legal Infect "Burn" spells!!

!!!

There are 11 Creature-based sources of Poison Counters in this deck; 10 in the 99 and 1 in the Command Zone...

Chances are, 30~60% of the Poison Counters necessary for victory will need to come from early & frequent Creature combat, particularly with the Ichor Rats themselves and in conjunction with the combat-tricks listed in the "Ad Hoc" section of "Step-3"

  • Part of the surprise comes from the various combat-tricks, on top of the general Reanimator-style...

  • Infect "Burn" spells: Infectious Inquiry and Vraska's Fall...

  • Virulent Wound as a Removal spell or combat-trick is worth a special mention as well...

It is not an unusual thing to see opposing decks fielding high-powered creatures (even in Pauper), and these creatures are not necessarily pointed in your direction 100% of the time (unless you have unlocked "Archenemy mode" —see below).

One of these hypothetical combats can be radically amplified with a single — casting Tainted Strike...

Turn-1:

Turn-2:

  • play Swamp...

  • Attack with Ichor Rats, and before combat-damage: cast Supernatural Stamina— targeting the Rats...

  • After combat: cast Village Rites— sacrificing the Rats, which will return to the Battlefield tapped, thus poisoning the table again...

  • Move to endstep...

    • End your turn-2 with one opponent at 6 Poison Counters, and the rest of the table at 2 Poison Counters..

** - Congratulations, the rest of the table has officially formed an alliance against you.. Good luck!
