Jace, Architect of Thought

Planeswalker — Jace

+1: Until your next turn, whenever a creature an opponent controls attacks, it gets -1/-0 until end of turn.

-2: Reveal the top three cards of your library. An opponent separates them into two piles. Put one pile into your hand and the other on the bottom of your library in any order.

-8: For each player, search that player's library for a nonland card and exile it, then that player shuffles their library. You may cast those cards without paying their mana costs.

Like your deck, but I'm just wondering why you chose Jace, Architect of Thought over Jace, the Mind Sculptor. The latter seems to have more going for him.

I think your deck lacks some clarity/direction:

  • you have super-aggro in Goblin Guide, but then a lot of slower creatures outside of that

  • you have a lot of prowess creatures, but then mostly countermagic spells (which the creatures won’t benefit from)

  • I don’t see how you benefit from running Upheaval.

  • Your sideboard just appears to be more cards you’d want to include in the deck, as opposed to being cards that will help your bad matchups.

I think you need to figure out what you want this deck to do, and then focus more on building this list with that goal in mind.

Some other, more generic thoughts:

  • Shock and Pillar of Flame just don’t do enough. Typically modern requires its bolt-cards do at least 3 damage to be viable.

  • There’s a reason Jace, Architect of Thought is a $0.79 card.

  • imo it’s better to run basics than lands that come in tapped. You’re only running 2 colours so the deck should be able to get-by fine with all-basics, whereas taplands are going to slow your plays down considerably

Academy Rector sac to pod get Doubling Season and a 5 drop in most builds it'd be Deepglow Skate - if you have any walkers on board chances are you can now ultimate and every walker coming down threatens an ultimate. :)

Arena Rector sac to pod get planeswalker of choice I usually get Jace, Architect of Thought or Ugin, the Spirit Dragon - and of course Deepglow Skate immediately ultimate walkers and watch everyone be sad.

Dovin is less usful than narset functionality wise but it's not like it's by a huge margin. If I were playing this commander my approach would be much different. I'd be running Arena Rector, Academy Rector all the cards like Birthing Pod and Deepglow Skate - being able to loop a Jace, Architect of Thought into an Ugin, the Spirit Dragon and whatever degenerate stuff your opponents have is just back breaking. You seem to be trying to pull punches/play more fair magic.

If it doesn't ultimate with doubling season or vornclex I'd cut it. Also, I'd only run walkers that provide insurmountable value once they ultimate like Jace, Architect of Thought or Ugin, the Spirit Dragon but I'm a filthy optimizer ;) If that's not your thing its really just going to be preferance they all do similar things but in this circumstance I give the edge to Teferi

Hi Moby, thanks for the feedback. Lots of cool suggestions as always. :)

I really should put Introduction to Annihilation in but to be honest I hadn't realised that I still had Spine of Ish Sah in the deck.

You're not wrong about evasion vs. anthems but I want some anthems so Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger is a two hit kill. I agree Obelisk of Urd is not a great fit as it doesn't add much beyond being an anthem and should be replaced by Akroma's Memorial which was previously too expensive but has been reprinted recently and I'll pick one on my next order. Phyrexian Splicer is also interesting looks to be a deceptively powerful one that I'll consider.

Whereas most of the other anthems do more Forsaken Monument is a mana doubler, Vanquisher's Banner and The Immortal Sun are card draw, and Adaptive Automaton is an early body which Eldrazi kind of lack.

I feel the monument cycle don't add enough outside of monocolour and granting trample is a little too conditional in this deck with less than 30 creatures.

You mentioned it in your comments but one of the most powerful things about Eldrazi are the big cast triggers hence why Lithoform Engine and Strionic Resonator are in instead of card like Helm of the Host and Minion Reflector .

P.S. I posted this deck in the discord because Ben ultimated Jace, Architect of Thought while playing on spelltable and wanted to search my deck.

Thanks for all your suggestions and your work! I own some copies of Vapor Snag , Serum Visions , Spreading Seas , Serum Visions and Thought Scour and will try them.

I think you're right about Jace, Architect of Thought and I will test some other stuff in this place.

Search for Azcanta  Flip is great and I want to try this card for a long time, maybe the time has come now.

I love Thing in the Ice  Flip, but I already play it in my Izzet Control-list and because of this, I want to try Elspeth here.
