Ghitu Slinger

ShreddedByCrows on Mathas EDH - A Real Pain in the Neck (Get it?)

SenseiRamen Here I come again! I'm glad some of my suggestions were helpful, I hope you're doing well with this version. It seems really cool, well done. :)

I tried a Mathas, Fiend Seeker's deck on my own those last week, with some cards I had left on my collection (so it's far from being optimized), and it's been a hell of good fun. I love the dilemma it causes on the game's state as even if you aren't the greatest tread everyone will play around your decisions and beware your control tools. This commander has surely a lot of serious potentials to exploit.

Before anything else, let me excuse myself for a mistake, I hadn't understood the interaction between the Kulrath Knight and Mathas at first sight... gosh, it's just insane! I really have to give a closer look at those cards I've nearly never seen. That's well thought!

Let's see now what we can improve once again. The etb sub-theme you choose to explore is definitely interesting, and as it goes I would suggest you replacing some creature over 4 mana cost (in order to make the Sun Titan even more reliable) with smaller ones with powerful etb effects. You could maybe, for the example, run something like a Bone Shredder, a Fleshbag Marauder, a Shivan Emissary (nice card but it will only trigger if you play it from your hand. The same is true for the Gatekeeper of Malakir, which is not a good idea there as its mana cost it 3B), a Duergar Hedge-Mage, a Ghitu Slinger (meh card though, the Bone Shredder is like...thousand times better), a Tooth Collector (delirium seems complicated to trigger, so I don't know if it could be that great), a Tidehollow Sculler, a Mesmeric Fiend, etc. I will give you further replacement's ideas for some of those.

Speaking of creatures around 3 manas, you could also play Kambal, Consul of Allocation, which is powerful and flavorful in a political meaning. For more cards with a cruel synergy with Mathas, you could even consider playing the Rampaging Ferocidon.

You may give a try to the Panharmonicon, or even to the Conjurer's Closet, if you do some changes this way, but I can't assure you it'll be that effective. The Cloudstone Curio, that I already suggested you in my first message, is certainly better (but a little more expensive), as it combines absurdly well with Tetzimoc, Primal Death and actually better with cards with Echo (if you decide to go for the Shredder).

Another really good option to never run out of removals is the creation of a Sunforger package. It generally consists of playing Mistveil Plains and something like 7-8 targetable removals. If you bought the Markov EDH deck (which contains Mathas), you could add in the Teferi's Protection (absurd and unfun card, but it's just so strong that you'll always appreciate it). I will, if you're ok with investing in just one card, replace Ob Nixilis Reignited with a Scroll Rack. If you plan to go to some Battlebond's drafts, try to get a Land Tax. It's certainly not a necessity if you play in a casual group, but it will give your global deck a lift - Scroll Rack / Land Tax interaction is what makes the Boros decks viable, as you play black in addition to those colours, you should be able to generate an excellent consistency between draw / ramp / control.

As it stands, you play the Rocky Tar Pit with only basic lands tutorizable, so it's basically just an Evolving Wilds that etb tapped. ^^' Smoldering Marsh and Canyon Slough are both affordable and very good for budget decks. If you decide to invest in a Scroll Rack or get the chance to get it by trading, Madblind Mountain is also a nice option as it enables you to re-shuffle a band hand in your library and to draw a brand new one.

A few suggestions (including replacement ideas) :

  • Duergar Hedge-Mage IN > Cataclysmic Gearhulk OUT (the CG (worst abbreviation of all times) is interesting, but most of the times it will put you in really uncomfortable situations. You play a bunch of artefacts and enchantments, so you'll often end sacrificing too many cards to inverse the course of the game. I understand the idea that it enables you getting rid of your opponents' enchantments/artefacts... but they can choose which one they keep so it's not even that good in the best scenarios.

  • Bone Shredder IN > Fountain Watch OUT (Having protection for your cards is always great, but the FW feels just way too weak. It's expensive to cast and have a minimal impact on the board state. It doesn't offer you any interaction with your other cards that can justify it... you will just prefer something that offers you more control on the game and which works well with Sun Titan.)

  • Cloudstone Curio IN > Ambition's Cost OUT (Draw is pretty important in this kind of deck, so why did I chose to cut the Ambition's Cost? It's not a bad card on its own, it's even fairly good tbh, but I feel you just don't need it. With Mathas' ability, Phyrexian Arena (and maybe later Scroll Rack), you're still gonna draw a lot of cards - you won't need it. The Cloudstone provides you with a powerful grip for the late game. Being able to recast your etb tread is just insane.

  • Scroll Rack IN > Indulgent Tormentor OUT (Again, the Tormentor is not that bad... but it's not that great either. It's slow and understated. Most of the time, your opponent will just pay the 3 life needed, if the Tormentor doesn't die to any blast since then. The Scroll Rack is godlike but I could understand your reluctance about the investment it symbolizes. Go for a Sunforger in this case (honnestyl I'll play both of them in a optimized list).

  • Land Tax IN > Bonfire of the Damned OUT (The Bonefire is strong, but it only gains a miracle cost if it's the first card you drew this turn. It's not that unreliable but it's still is a bit. I will prefer an effective and sure board clear over it. You will find one just there below ^^)

  • Fire Covenant IN > Void Winnower OUT (The Winnower is surely a funny card. It's big, it locks a bit the game and gives you the initiative... but I think that in an optimized decklist you just don't need it. It competes for a slot with cards that synergizes better with Mathas, so that's why I would cut it.)

  • Sunforger IN > Orzhov Signet OUT

  • Teferi's Protection IN > Swamp OUT

  • Canyon Slough IN > Unknown Shores OUT

  • Smoldering Marsh IN > Vivid Crag OUT

  • Forbidden Orchard IN > Mirrodin's Core OUT

  • Mistveil Plains IN > Spire of Industry OUT

  • Madblind Mountain IN > 1xMountain OUT

Terminate is also a powerful card to consider with Mathas, but I can't actually find which card to cut for it. I hope those suggestions will be helpful, let me know how does it evolved and worked out! Have fun brewing, mate. :)

Muush on Recruiterless Aluren (Primer)

The problem with all those cards is that they only work when Aluren is already out. Their contribution without it is very limited or downright nonexistent. This is especially true for noncreature cards in Recruiter lists, since the main tutor only finds creatures, so they have to carry most of the deck's weight. If you're running red, Ghitu Slinger is a good choice; useful against many threats like Insectile Aberration, Dark Confidant, Young Pyromancer and the like (and especially against Magus of the Moon), and with Aluren it's a kill condition.

Genesis Chamber looks interesting, it may have potential against control decks. Could be a nice sideboard card in the right metagame. Sadly I've never tried it.

UPDATE!

I am lowering the mana-curve.

I found out that Aurochs Herd is too slow in the current meta. I switch the 3 Aurochs Herd for a third Blastoderm and two Mogg War Marshal. Even if Mogg War Marshal is considered an aggro card, it can really help control the board. The 1/1 Goblin tokens can block and they can be equipped with Bonesplitter or enchanted with Elephant Guide.

I switch the two Ghitu Slinger (which underperformed) for two Tattermunge Duo. It has a solid body and its pump effect can help him deliver damage or survive a damage removal or a block.

Any though?

bushido_man96 I get where you are coming from and under other circumstances your suggestions do make much sense. It's not that I rely on this one 5 colour deck for all my games in the same playgroup though. We all have some decks to change and the matchup multicolour against mono seems to be particularly bad, so I wanted to find ways to improve that. The "trick" with trying to build something that appears weaker than it is doesn't really work imo. Usually I try to kill the player first, who is easiest to remove in the early game, because he might play something that is hard to remove later in the game. It depends on the commander and if I know the deck and player, but doing unsuspiscious stuff in the beginning often means that the real action comes afterwards.

If I don't want to worry about blood moon at all, I can always play one of my other decks...I have one for every colour, Rhonas, Purphoros, Xiahou Dun, Jhoira (90% blue), Brimaz, my best deck is probably UW Stax and I have a Gitrog Monster. During one evening I don't play all decks, usually I play a deck until I have won once or twice, then take another one. Last week I happened to run into mono R and mono U with the 5 colour combo and the games showed some flaws in my deck. I managed to get rid of a Magus because I topdecked the single basic plains in the deck and hand a Path already available but I wasn't able to remove a blood moon even though I had a recruiter and Kiki Jiki...if that doesn't work, there's clearly something missing in the deck.

I do quite well with the 31 lands because there are mana dorks and some artifacts. I'm always somewhere between 30 and 33 and the amount of mana usually isn't the problem...with one free mulligan there's a good chance of getting what you need. The choice of lands is imporant though. I've removed Volcanic Island for an additional basic forest because I rarely need the combination UR. I tried removing Anger now because that was my main reason for playing duals with red but without green...and Anger was mostly needed for a trick with Master of Cruelties/Volrath's Shapeshifter and I kicked that combo out. The importance of Badlands still needs to be checked. I do want to keep the shocklands with green though, because green is my main colour.

What makes it difficult to cut something is that all the combo parts interact with something else and it's hard to find out what can absolutely not be thrown out and what is just a nice gimmick but not essential. Volrath's Shapeshifter and Defense of the Heart for example look great but I am not sure how much they really do in the current build. Defense can win the game if it triggers, but the requirement of 3 opponent creatures might be hard to meet by the time I could win with something else.

I'm testing Flametongue Kavu now, maybe Ghitu Slinger and I have Birthing Pod and Reclamation Sage in the deck again. We are opening some HOU displays tomorrow and I hope to get a Razaketh. Jin Gitaxias has also arrived yesterday, so I'm going to test him too as one of the reanimation targets. Cryptolith Rite might replace another land, because it makes all creatures into mana dorks...with all that specualtion and your inputs I think I should rather test some chances and see how it works in practice. I don't have a Sneak Attack but this and the EE dlamars suggested are on my watchlist. I'm still in favour of instant/sorcery removals (besides creatures with built-in removals) because Snapcaster Mage can reuse them and I've got nothing to make artifacts searchable or reusable.

Hi Pudding_PopFirst of all I really like your Agro style of attack with this deck. And making this to teach someone with in mind, I think it's straightforward enough to not confuse anyone so good on you! foxboy93 is right in most of his suggestions though as far as dealing with artifacts and enchantments as well as discard/draw fuel. Mindless Automaton in particular is an unbelievable card in my own Alesha, Who Smiles at Death deck, it does more work than almost any other card. Also, Magus of the Disk is a creature form of the disk that can be recurred with Alesha and is cheap money wise. But I don't see a whole lot of creature removal from your actual creatures, which is a huge opportunity with Alesha. I'd really recommend some cheap creatures like Bone Shredder or Ghitu Slinger, but also since you have more attacking synergy here, there are some cool force blocking cards that would definitely help you keep the board clear. Invasion Plans has almost no downside for an Agro deck like yours since you'll likely be tapped out anyway, and you can ram Tajic, Blade of the Legion into any difficult creatures. Brutal Hordechief does the same thing and drains your opponents when you attack, but you have to pay for the force block. Stern Constable will also help you discard important creatures and tap down blockers or annoying creatures, and at 1 mana, it's a game changing turn 1 play. If you'd like I'm updating my Alesha deck now if you wanna take a look at it, it's more controlling and "deathy" haha but your Agro is something I've considered making mine for a while now. Since these comments keep showing up in my messages, I thought I'd add a few more suggestions.
When I played Alesha, I really liked Chittering Rats, Flesh Carver, and Lone Missionary. The rats will sometimes end the game if you can recur them because your opponent can't draw cards. Flesh Carver gets bigger and is hard to block while keeping ETB creatures in the graveyard. The missionary just helps in damage races.
I never played with Stingscourger, but I would give it a try. Mardu has a ton of good creature removal, but sting is repeatable because of the echo cost. It seems like a very easy way of removing an opposing Doran, the Siege Tower or Courser of Kruphix.
You're totally right about Ghitu Slinger. That guy does so much work.

@UnleashedHavok

Abusing Fiend Hunter's dual triggers is a waste of resources. has plenty of removal options. Fiend Hunter, and similar cards, aren't needed.

Same goes for Stingscourger. I don't need the bounce effect when I'm in a colour combination swimming in removal.

Bone Shredder is actually getting cut for Ghitu Slinger. Repeatable Shocks is more desirable than Terrors.

Ghitu Slinger is epic because he puts himself back in the yard.
Chittering Rats is game ending if you can sacrifice it.
Fulminator Mage is great if you have one.
Lone Missionary wins races.
Avatar of Discord helps get creatures in the yard.
And Firestorm. Alesha lists never have the best card ever for that commander.
