Garruk, Savage Herald

Legendary Planeswalker — Garruk

+1: Reveal the top card of your library. If it's a creature card, put it into your hand. Otherwise, put it on the bottom of your library.

-2: Target creature you control deals damage equal to its power to another target creature.

-7: Until end of turn, creatures you control gain "You may have this creature assign its combat damage as though it weren't blocked."

Heck no Lokasa!
If Pir, Imaginative Rascal gets you excited, I think you 'ought to go for it. This is YOUR deck, you can make it however you like. We can work to compensate for the speed by changing out the ramp package!

I will note that with Pir, Imaginative Rascal, you'd also get Toothy, Imaginary Friend as a free second commander which gives you access to cards like Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus, Ezuri, Stalker of Spheres, Ichormoon Gauntlet, Deepglow Skate along with a bunch more planeswalkers and proliferators and duplicators. Since your deck is called mono-green, I'm gonna write the rest of this comment assuming you don't want to add any blue cards.

Accelerated Ramp, these are gonna focus more on getting lands straight to the battlefield and being cheap to use. If possible, having these attached to creatures to block early on:
Nature's Lore
Sakura-Tribe Elder
Three Visits
Rampant Growth
Yavimaya Elder
Fertilid
Topiary Stomper
And that would take place of all of your three mana mana-ramp and your ramp that brings lands to hand (they work best with Azuza, so now we don't need them).

Then we can come up with fast removal to protect you early and give you early blockers:
Cankerbloom
Thrashing Brontodon
Nature's Claim

We can replace the planeswalkers we lost earlier Garruk, Savage Herald, Nissa, Genesis Mage, Vivien, Arkbow Ranger, Vivien, Champion of the Wilds, Vivien, Nature's Avenger with more that'll keep you safe and will give us space for better support cards:
Nissa, Ascended Animist
Wrenn and Seven

Finally, we can think about how to use those planeswalkers more effectively with cards like:
The Peregrine Dynamo doubles up your planeswalker ability
Kamahl's Druidic Vow can be another Genesis Wave in this deck.
I'll also add Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider though will warn you MOST people do not enjoy playing against that card.

Note that my opinion is just as useless as anyone else's and any choices you make will be the right ones for you. I hope you find your fun <3

Heyo! Never seen mono green superfriends. Seems like a cool idea. I'd suggest running more land ramp Nissa's Triumph, Nissa's Pilgrimage, You Happen on a Glade

Recursion: Bala Ged Recovery  Flip your mana base is solid. You can use this.

Mass removal options: Fade from History, Rampage of the Clans.

Defense options: Arachnogenesis or Jaheira's Respite or Spore Frog

Card I'd consider removing:
Nyxbloom Ancient. The deck has a high average CMC. But by the time you can cast this card, that's not much of a problem anymore. This card is great when you have mana sinks. Which you do not.

Omnath, Locus of Mana. It's a big creature. Your win conditions sound more in line with tons of small creatures and an Overrun like effect.

Seedborn Muse. Yes it's good with three of your artifacts. I think the slot would be better served with something else.

Gauntlet of Power. You don't need this. It's slow.

Sol Ring. You run so few artifacts/Enchantments, you may just be better off running less of them yourself so you can use mass removal.

Nyx Lotus. Let your lands and creatures do the ramping for you.

Garruk, Savage Herald. You have 22 creatures in your deck. The +1 has a 80% chance of doing nothing the turn you play it. The -ability doesn't matter because most of your creatures are there to support planeswalkers.

Vivien, Arkbow Ranger. Again, lots of small creatures.

Vivien, Champion of the Wilds. The first ability is rather pointless, the static ability only affects creatures. The last ability is occasionally draw a card. Better replaced with something like Worldly Tutor or Natural Order or Chord of Calling.

Sylvan Anthem. Replace this with a win condition like Craterhoof Behemoth, Thunderfoot Baloth, Overrun, Tribal Forcemage, Kamahl, Heart of Krosa, Song of Freyalise, Pathbreaker Ibex, End-Raze Forerunners, Overwhelming Stampede

I've heard strong evidence for Zendikar, but honestly he strikes me far more as Kaldheim. Here's why:

  • It is often depicted as Nordic men being absolute behemoths in size and stature. In reality, according to Google, skeletal remains place their average height at 5'7" with an average Northern European male height at 5'8". This means that in reality, Nordic men were actually average, or even slightly less average, in height than the typical man of their era. Regardless of this, in all depictions, they are regarded as towering brutes. And Garruk, true to this fantasy stereotype, stands at 8'2".
  • In Western fantasy depictions of Nordic culture, the "viking helmet" often bore horns. We know this today to be false. However, taking inspiration from this, Garruk's helm having tusks is a nice homage - even if it became more of a happy coincidence many years after his inception.
  • The paint and / or tattoos he covers his body, armor and axe in are very strongly reminiscent of Norse artwork and styles of painting, with bold, hard lines crossing over one-another, especially in their Runes.
  • In Kaldheim, Bretagard was the realm of Man and is associated with magic and mana. Garruk is mono-green, excluding the he gained from his curse. As this curse was not natural and not part of his birth / ignition, I think it is safe and fair to exclude it for the analysis. Yes, he continued to show black mana in the use of his card Garruk, Cursed Huntsman. However, Throne of Eldraine released in 2019. Since then we have had three new Garruks; Garruk, Savage Herald, Garruk, Unleashed and Garruk, Wrath of the Wilds - all of whom now lack mana.
  • Again, while it may be somewhat stereotypical in nature, it is also not without precedent that Nordic men carried and used axes. Axes were seen with far more utility, although there is a strong difference between a woodcutting axe, a hatchet and a battleaxe. Regardless, axes were a keen and strong point of their culture. And, just so happens to be what weapon Garruk carries. Honestly, what he carries is more akin to a Bardiche, which did not see development until centuries after the Nordic empires fell. However, it has strong ties and developments from the Danish Halberd and similar polearms of that era. Now that is not to say that the weapon vanished for centuries and suddenly reappeared after some historian rediscovered it - That isn't how the evolution of weapons and armor works. What actually happens is someone develops a piece of armor that better thwarts modern technology. Someone reciprocates with developing a weapon that makes that armor inferior. And so the armor is updated to ward against that new weapon, and a dance ensues as armor and weapons evolve to out-pace one another. Regardless, what Garruk carries and wields serves not only as a cultural reminder, but an actual weapon of fact.
  • Garruk is seen wearing the furs of animals he likely has slain. It is known that Berserkers of the Norse era wore pelts as well, such as wolves, foxes and yes even bears.
  • And lastly, Garruk's father's name is Raklan, who was a Taskmage who lived on a farm. That spelling is actually very similar to the real-world male name Raakel, which meant "Sheep's Friend", as well as Rakim and a few more that aren't really worth listing. You can check out names of that era with this website

Honestly there is really only three main points that "tie" Garruk to Zendikar:

  • His ability to control their beasts (Which doesn't count, as he can do this on all Planes as that is part of his magic)
  • His abnormal size (Which means nothing; Zendikar is known for titanic forces, but so is Tarkir, Ikoria, Ixalan, etc. Just because someone is "big" does not mean they came from Zendikar)

Segue: Often speculated, people mention Garruk's "growth magic" and how powerful it is on Zendikar. But this does not mean he is a native to that world. Liliana's powers are strongest on Innistrad, despite her being native to Dominaria. Different Planes have different types of mana, and it is inevitable a Planeswalker would find a world where their mana is strongest. For example, Ashiok's magic was the most powerful on Theros, due to that world's working of "Devotion". By tapping into the innate fears everyone had, he could make them believe his terrors were far more real than they were. Because of how Theros works, belief gives power, and so their fears manifest in far more dramatic forms - meaning Ashiok's powers are far stronger on Theros than nearly anywhere else. Despite him, in my opinion, being likely from Tarkir under the rule of Silumgar as a Priest. But that's for another thread.

  • His right-arm gauntlet resembling the armor and weapons of the Guul Draz Assassin, which only proves he has been to Zendikar and likely took one of these from a fallen enemy; Not that he was physically born there. Perhaps best seen on Garruk Relentless  Flip

I honestly feel like Garruk is far more aligned with being a native to Bretagard than Zendikar.

I do not believe it was announced where Garruk was actually from, as of yet, but if I had to pick between a pre-existing world or creating an entirely new one - as seems to be the going trend, I'd say Bretagard from Kaldheim is where he's from.

Fun deck! I would like to point out that Tormentor's Helm does not trigger Toski or Marisi since it does not deal combat damage. If you would like an effect that does that, maybe try Predatory Focus or Outmaneuver since they are both under six mana. Other cards that would be helpful for that are Garruk, Savage Herald and Siege Behemoth .

Hi there.

I really like the idea of The Prismatic Bridge as a buildaround, but I don't think this would be where it goes. My 50 cents:

  • If The Prismatic Bridge is your buildaround, you probably want the full playset to make sure you find it consistently. I know you play a ton of "search" spells, but those are usually way too slow and clunky.
  • Only being able to cast Bridge off of Dryad of the Ilysian Grove makes for a very inconsistent wincon, especially since you're only running 3 copies. I'd at least add The World Tree to the mana pool, if this is the way you want to go.
  • Once you get the Bridge down, the creatures that it can hit will already be outclassed, as getting 1x free 3- or 4-drop a turn after turns 4-5 rarely does the job.
  • There are some subpar cards, that you probably shouldn't include in a Standard deck, unless you're running on a budget or playing casual Magic - Garruk, Savage Herald and all the other walkers from PW-decks are purposely nerfed compared to the powerlevel of the main sets and Outmuscle is too expensive for what it does. Much better options are Blizzard Brawl and Primal Might .
  • Don't run more than 60 cards in your deck, unless you're playing Yorion, Sky Nomad as your companion. It will make your deck more inconsistent and is not worth the (only slightly) better match-up vs. Rogues.

Honestly, I imagine that Bridge goes in a ramp deck that can make a 5-color mana base work, and has a lot of big boom-booms like Ugin, the Spirit Dragon , Koma, Cosmos Serpent etc. If you want to stay mono-green though, I'd suggest you slant more towards a traditional green aggro deck, but with a bit higher top end like Vivien, Monsters' Advocate and Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider and then play 4x Dryad of the Ilysian Grove and 4x The World Tree to be able to cast The Prismatic Bridge consistently.

Hope that helps mate. Good luck with the deck!

Just the first deck i try to build, around cards i like, for Arena. Really open to any suggestion to help me improve my overall deckbuilding skills

I always liked Garruk's lore and flavor, so i searched for any legal Garruk Planeswalkers for Standard, and i found two: Garruk, Savage Herald and Garruk, Unleashed. If I had more Garruk i'v been added more Garruk. Garruk is the only mandatory element in this deck.

1) As in many games things like Planewalkers bring game-driving mechanics, i tried to analyze those two cards

  • Garruk, Unleashed is kinda midgame play with a -2 to help filling your board, and hopefully i'm gonna have my early plays ( Lovestruck Beast, Nessian Hornbeetle, Garruk, Savage Herald) good to get value from that +3/+3. That emblem's gonna help me fill my board even more to prepare for Garruk, Savage Herald big final rush.

  • Garruk, Savage Herald is gonna help me tutor some fat creatures just in case, even though i added some draw power that needs playtest. To efficiently get value from his -2 i think that's gonna be used to get rid of those value-generatind mid plays nearly any deck has. The last skill should be the main finisher of the deck, assuming at that point my board is good enough.

2) Then, i needed some big bad fellas to push for that damage. I realized that green has quite the strong curve potential.

  • I found some good early plays in Scavenging Ooze and Nessian Hornbeetle, they can even get bigger and participate to the final rush. Lovestruck Beast seems really good also, but dunno, his condition seems too easy to play around.

  • For the bigger guys i put Questing Beast wich i found amazing, just don't know if there's a point putting 3x of a Legendary. 2x seems ok but 3x maybe is too much. Ironscale Hydra is kinda filler cause it seems really strong presence on the board, but suffers the total lack of protection the whole deck has. Just strong against other creatures. Nyela, Keen-Eyed has a really goog body for its cost and should help me in curve optimization with her discount, the other effect is kinda situational. Already have some tutoring tools. Garruk's Harbinger and Garruk's Warsteed are good cause this way i can put less Planeswalkers and more creatures since they are tutors themselves, especially Garruk's Warsteed that's good value for that cost imo.

3) At this point i wandered wich kind of support a deck like this could demand for.

  • Ramp: Ilysian Caryatid, Wolfwillow Haven and The Great Henge are my ramp tools, many of my main mechanics are heavy on mana and this should help. One's a creature, one's an Aura and one's an Artifact to help me against different colors that have different removals for different kind of permanents. This way i shoul be able to prevent the opponent eliminate 100% of my ramp source.

  • Draw: with a pretty good amount of mana to spend and my two Planeswalkers being such valuable, i think i'm gonna need some draw power. Also i have quite numerous early-plays. I found that Garruk's Uprising has good draw power and helps me pushing some extra damage with trample and hopefully trigger Garruk's Harbinger tutoring. The First Iroan Games i'm testing it on a budget deck and i quite like it, for draw power and for basically a 4/4 with cost of 3 most of the time. Not a decisive card but is an useful tool. Return of the Wildspeaker makes me kinda sacrifice a whole turn but it's like an emergency draw. Also the other effect is really good paired with the -7 of Garruk, Savage Herald.

  • Board control: some board control tools help me handle dangerous value-generating mid plays, with Ram Through having good damage potential and little extra direct damage, and Khalini Ambush being basically a land if drawn early game, otherwise could be situational but good. Also the -2 of Garruk, Savage Herald is here for board control.

This is it, please let me know everything i did wrong. And be kind, always.

Thank you!
