Aether Vial

Artifact

At the beginning of your upkeep, you may put a charge counter on Aether Vial.

: You may put a creature card with converted mana cost/mana value equal to the number of charge counters on Aether Vial from your hand onto the battlefield.

I definitely underestimated Wirewood Symbiote and the value of ETB effects in elves. In my playtesting I have been leaning harder into Quirion Ranger and pursuing Tooth and Nail for my win condition. that Eladamri, Korvecdal absolutly seems amazing because it doesnt lock you into a creature type... I personally have been using Aether Vial to chuck out creatures from hand thinking that felt strong but the casting from the top of the library can just be absolutely busted i love it.

after watching the video I've come to these conclusions:

  • Shaman of the Pack will win the game via high Elf population; and that's pretty much all there is to it. Seems far and above to be the most consistent way for Elves to win.

  • Tooth and Nail needs a high elf population, a mana boon elf Priest of Titania/Elvish Archdruid that can as well as having targets for tooth and nail that are otherwise bricks/dead in your hand like Tyrant of Discord and Realm Razer (there are certainly better targets I just was having fun)

  • Craterhoof Behemoth is similar to tooth and nail for the requirements but can feel awkward because somtimes you can elves for mana and then suddenly not have enough attackers for lethal damage.

all in all im just kinda excited for elves in the upcoming near future... I think I wanna give them an honest try.

Kabira Evangel + Aether Vial on an opponent's turn means you can protect Harabaz Druid all the time so long as you have Allies to play.

I think this looks very solid considering working within the budget allotment. You have most of the important pieces, namely the lords and the utility Merfolk, so that frees up slots otherwise devoted to countermagic and the like.

Without altering the budget and wading into the deeper end of the expensive cardpool like the examples DreadKhan mentioned, there isn’t a whole lot more you can do without completely shifting strategies (not that you should, Aether Vial lords is viable and performs well).

Welcome back. I found myself in a similar boat when I started playing again around 2019. Yeah…there are encyclopedia’s worth of new rules, abilities and even card types to learn. It’s daunting. Good news is all the core principles are mostly the same.

For instance, taplands are bad (especially in Vintage). If you already own them or if budget allows, definitely run duals, fetches or shocklands. There are also variations, like SeachromeCoast, Port Town and Prairie Stream and these are much easier on the wallet while still being playable.

Also, running 1-of’s in a non-singleton format is usually a bad idea for the purposes of consistency, although certain OP cards that are restricted to a lone copy are still run for obvious reasons. Vintage gets away with bending the rules, in that sense. Specifically, I see you’re running just one Aether Vial. I would either commit to 4x (which plenty of Merfolk decks accommodate just fine) or remove it, as the odds of drawing just one copy are low to the point of being unreliable.

The term "battlefield" also is included in "put onto the battlefield" (Aether Vial, I don't see this one changing), "return to the battlefield" (Not Dead After All, changing this would cause confusion with "return to hand" effects), "each ____ on the battlefield" (Ancestral Mask, this probably could change without too many problems), "from the battlefield" (Ashiok's Reaper, I don't think "dies" is going to become universal, and the starting zone jas to be defined), and probably several others, so "battlefield" as a zone and rules term isn't going anywhere.

It's being shortened probably because there's only one game zone that is "entered." There's no cards that refer to entering the graveyard or entering your hand, so there's little risk of ambiguity. And card texts are becoming longer, so clearing out some of the clutter isn't necessarily a bad thing.

This deck seems pretty decent for a new-brew! Some suggestions for improving the deck:

  • You always want to aim to be only running 60 cards. While 64 might not seem like much over this, it's going to lead to a less-consistent, and weaker, deck.

  • Aether Vial seems like a weak choice here, as your deck has a range of differently-costed creatures, you'll be unlikely to get much reliable value from it. I would personally be swapping it for a range of 1-off 0-1 mana artifacts you can toolbox-find with Urza's Saga - for example, one-each of Pithing Needle, Relic of Progenitus, Shadowspear and Welding Jar

It's sweet how budget this list is! I have no idea how good 8 rack is in modern right now but I could see it being rough without access to some of the big haymakers that Coffers has, are you finding that you can get under decks like Yawg and Titan? Would love to see some matchup specific info in your description. Sudden Spoiling is a sweet card btw. Have you considered running Field of Ruin, Demolition Field, Sunken Citadel? These cards are affordable and can be pretty effective vs some greedy decks. And of course Urza's Saga tutoring for your rack is pretty banger. Also here's an idea, Aether Vial for Augur of Skulls during upkeep? Probably not the best thing for this deck but in another build maybe!

The list looks good. As someone who played something very similar previously (in a word when Fury was still legal), i’m not convinced you want Aether Vial or Deadly Dispute… the deck functions best when being hyper-aggressive, and while both of these cards serve as strong tempo-plays, they also buy your opponent time to stabilise. I’d rather see more aggressive options like Jadar, Ghoulcaller of Nephalia and/or Ob Nixilis, the Adversary, which both play well into the sacrifice payoffs while also applying more pressure to the opponent.
