responding to sacrifice trigger with sacrifice

Asked by Artemis_Swift 8 years ago

In a game I was playing today I had Sheoldred, Whispering One in play, I passed the turn, thus beginning my opponent's turn.
When Sheoldred, Whispering One's ability activated at the beginning of his upkeep, He chose to respond by using Scarland Thrinax's ability, targeting the creature he was going to sacrifice due to Sheoldred, Whispering One.
Is that a legal move or was he forced to choose another creature to sacrifice?

First, Sheoldred, Whispering One's ability triggers. Only an activated ability can be activated, and activations are always manual. Triggered abilities trigger automatically when the stated condition is met.

You don't choose the creature you sacrifice until Sheoldred, Whispering One's ability resolves. Anything you do before then is somewhat irrelevant. If you control at least one creature when the ability resolves, you'll have to choose one of the creatures you control at that time and sacrifice it. Sacrificing a creature before Sheoldred, Whispering One's ability resolves just forces you to sacrifice a different creature when Sheoldred, Whispering One's ability resolves.
