Double Xenagos Mana?

Asked by RonnieK 9 years ago

Question.

Can you pump Xenagos, the Reveler for mana as his +1 ability, then spend mana to replace that Xenagos, with another copy of Xenagos(because both can't exist on the field at the same time). You'd obviously lose your first Xenagos for no reason... Or would you?

Can I then pump the new Xenagos for mana again? Since its a whole new Plains Walker? I guess I'd ask this question for any loyalty ability/plains Walker across the board. Are the activations based on turn, or plains Walker's individually?

Thanks guys!

You would loose the first Xenagos, the Reveler because of the Legend rule.-704.5k If a player controls two or more legendary permanents with the same name, that player chooses one of them, and the rest are put into their owners' graveyards. This is called the "legend rule".

But yes you could cast another Xenagos, the Reveler and also activate his loyalty ability for that turn. Each planeswalker can activate their abilities once a turn, and the second Xenagos, the Reveler is a new planeswalker.

The Legend rule is not applicable to planeswalkers because planeswalkers are not legendary permanents. Instead, planeswalkers have their own rule called the "planeswalker uniqueness rule."

306.4. If a player controls two or more planeswalkers that share a planeswalker type, that player chooses one of them, and the rest are put into their owners' graveyards. This is called the "planeswalker uniqueness rule." See rule 704.

The planeswalker uniqueness rule works based on planeswalker subtypes rather than names. If you control two or more planeswalkers with the same planeswalker subtype (in this case, that subtype is Xenagos), then all but one of them are put into their owner's graveyard.

Now, loyalty abilities are tracked by permanent, not by subtype or anything else. You may activate one loyalty ability of each of your permanents on each of your turns.

306.5d Each planeswalker has a number of loyalty abilities, which are activated abilities with loyalty symbols in their costs. Loyalty abilities follow special rules: A player may activate a loyalty ability of a permanent he or she controls any time he or she has priority and the stack is empty during a main phase of his or her turn, but only if none of that permanents loyalty abilities have been activated that turn. See rule 606, "Loyalty Abilities."

Because the second Xenagos, the Reveler is a separate permanent, you can activate a loyalty ability of the first Xenagos, the Reveler, play a second Xenagos, the Reveler, put the first Xenagos, the Reveler into your graveyard as a state-based action, and then activate a loyalty ability of the second Xenagos, the Reveler.
