Serum Alignment - $50 budget

Modern Exile WUB (Esper)

Charchar9000

Sideboard

A casual modern deck built around hedron alignment and utilising exile as an extension of the hand. Built to a very cheap budget, so no fetch/shocklands or "free" counterspells. If building with a higher deck I would reccomend putting in Force of Negation and Subtlety, possibly removing Serum Powder altogether, as they are much more useful ways of getting your hedrons into exile.

This deck aggressively mulligans, usually going to 5 or sometimes 4 cards. This is because we are aiming to use Serum Powder to exile a Hedron Alignment and possibly an Eternal Scourge in the process before we even start the game.

Creatures Eldrazi Mimic and Eternal Scourge are our only creatures, Eldrazi mimic is a good turn 1/2 drop to block an opponent's early plays, it also turns into an aggressive 3/3 as early as turn 2 if we get a scourge to buff it. Scourge is useful because if it gets exiled with Serum Powder as we set up it's an extra card, otherwise it's a very pesky creature to remove, only really dying to board wipes and combat damage. This usually gives us enough time to build our hedron network up.

The Hedrons The main win condition of this deck is using Hedron Alignment. To do this we need to get one into exile, one into our graveyard, have one on the battlefield and one in our hand at the start of our upkeep. The one in exile we try to accomplish before we start using Serum Powder, but if we can't do that then we can pitch a hedron to Snapback or we can use a Surgical Extraction to search our library for a hedron and put it into exile. Surgical extraction is a useful disruption tool against combo decks and murktide, this works by countering their first wincon to put it in the graveyard, then using surgical extraction to move all their wincons to exile.

Removal Splashing white allows us to take Prismatic Ending and Portable Hole, meaning anything with mana cost 2 or less is easy to remove. Snapback is the only removal for larger creatures, bouncing it to the opponent's hand, with the intention for it to be countered next turn.

Counterspells Spellpierce is the only counterspell, at 1 mana it's a useful tool to shut down the opponent's early plays, but it can fall off later in the game.

Card draw Faithful Mending is the best card draw in the deck, letting us look at four more cards, put our hedron alignment into the graveyard and gets us a decent boost of life for against aggro decks, this is thanks to the flashback. We also have Thought Scour and Thirst for Meaning both of these are intended to get a hedron alignment into the graveyard at instant speed.

Lands Because it's a budget deck, I'm running only basic lands, as well as Eldrazi Temple to play Eternal Scourge earlier or to drop Eldrazi Mimic on turn one. There is also two copies of Moorland Haunt which gets the scourge back into exile if it dies and provides us with a 1/1 flier to block threats.
