Azorious finally has a win con in the command zone and the cEDH Community is more than excited. During a episode of Inventor's Fair (their brewing series), Kraum (Kraum#6697 on Discord) and I brewed a preliminary version of Vega, the Watcher. Vega herself does not provide an immense amount of value outside of any of our combos. What did catch our eye was her synergy with Isochron Scepter and Dramatic Reversal. Each cast of the imprinted Dramatic Reversal will trigger Vega and allow us to draw a card, creating a unique win condition for not only Azorious as a whole color, but also as a rare addition to Isochron Scepter decks that can win even if the your mana production is only breakingi even. We will cover this further into the primer.

TESTING BOARD (YOUR COMMENTS HELP US KNOW HOW GOOD THESE CARDS PERFORMED FOR YOU)

What you Need:

Option 1: - Mana Rocks producing a total of mana minimum.

Option 2: - Mana Rocks producing a total of mana total. - Vega, the Watcher in play.

Cast Isochon Scepter. If it resolves, you will chose to imprint Dramatic Reversal. Activate Isochron Scepter, untapping both the scepter and all of your mana rocks. Repeat this process, floating mana, until you have an amount of mana that is so arbitrarily large it is no longer a question of how much mana you have. Cast Vega, the Watcher. Repeat the Isochron Scepter loop. If you chose option 2 the loop is the same but you draw from your library until you find a zero drop artifact and can break positive on mana production. You will draw a card each time the copy of Dramatic Reversal is cast. After your library is in hand, my preferred line of winning is as such (spoilers, it's a Timetwister Loop and there are many ways to finish the table off):

  • Resolve Silence
  • Cast Hullbreacher
  • Cast Timetwister
  • Cast Narset's Reversal, targetting Timetwister. The original Timetwister will be returned to your hand. The copy will then resolve, shuffling Narset's Reversal and the rest of your graveyard into your library. You may then reactivate Isochron Scepter as many times as you need until your library is back in your hand. This creates a loop where you may now cast any instant/sorcery (or spell that ends up in your graveyard) and it will be shuffled back into your library by the copied Timetwister to be redrawn and recast later.

Ending the Game

If you followed the above steps, you not only have the infinite mana, but you also have infinite treasure tokens (thanks to Hullbreacher and lots of Timetwisters. My typical game ending scenario is: - Cast any spell. Counter it with Swan Song, creating a 2/2 Bird creature token with flying. Repeat until you have a billion swans. - Play all your creatures. DO NOT CAST Archmage Emeritus - Gilded Drake all your opponent's creatures. Bounce your Gilded Drake with Unsubstansiate. Loop Unsubstantiate back, repeat. - Bounce all your opponents nonland permanents. Chain of Vapor or Unsubstantiate (counter the CoS copies) - Turn your opponents artifacts into 4/4s with Resculpt and then bounce them or Drake them. - Turn several thousand of your treasure tokens into 4/4s with Resulpt

Pass the Turn (make sure you leave yourself in a safe position to draw a card on the next turn).

At this point your opponents have no hands or nonland permanents. They also have no graveyards. Between each of them drawing a single card during their turns, I promise you there is no possible way for you to lose the game or not win on your turn. Even each of your opponents drawing an Angel's Grace is delaying the inevitable. Swing with your swans and kill them.

Every deck needs a backup win con. That's a bit of bad news for Azorious decks, which honestly didn't have much of a win con to work off of in the first place. In the end, we settled with something that was not only a win condition, but could act as a cute bit of advantage for Vega, the Watcher if things were dipping really far into the late-game and getting dicey.

What you need - Mystic Forge - Sensei's Divining Top - Etherium Sculptor

Mystic Forge allows you to cast Artifacts off the top of your library. Sensei's Divining Top puts itself at the top of your library in exchange for drawing a card. Etherium Sculptor makes Sensei's Divining Top cost to cast, creating a loop where you draw your entire library and are free to assemble whatever combo you wish from there. It's important to note that this loop does not require Vega, the Watcher to do anything, but she does make it so that you draw extra cards off casting things from the top of your library with Mystic Forge. Again, this is not my favorite combo. Hopefully Azorious will be blessed with better back-up combos in the future, but this is what we are stuck with for the time being. I understand that the combo could be added to, such as the inclusion of more cost reducers, but I do not want to dedicate a lot of slots to what should only be your absolute final resort as a back-up.

After a fantastic game of Vega this afternoon, I discovered a win line that does not involve Timetwister Loops, nor does it require you to pass the turn to win via combat damage on your next turn.

What you need - Any of the previous wins conditions found above. Your whole deck should be in your hand, infinitne mana, lots os treasures, you've resolved a Silence, stripped your opponents hands with Hullbreacher, etc. - No Vega, the Watcher or Hullbreacher in play. - Threshold (Seven+ cards in your graveyard)

  1. Cast/Assemble Isochron Scepter + Dramatic Reversal.
  2. Copy Artifact as a copy of Isochron Scepter, imprinting Narset's Reversal.
  3. Cast Mox Diamond, discarding Cephalid Coliseum.
  4. Cast Sevinne's Reclamation, targeting Cephalid Coliseum in your graveyard.
  5. Activate your Copy Artifact Isochron Scepter, using the copy of Narset's Reversal to copy Sevinne's Reclamation, targetting Cephalid Coliseum with the copy. The original Sevinne's Reclamation returns to your hand.
  6. Cephalid Coliseum returns to the battlefield. Activate it, targetting an opponent. They will draw three cards and discard three cards, leaving their hand empty again.
  7. Activate the original Isochron Scepter + Dramatic Reversal, untapping both Isochron Scepters.
  8. Repeat steps 4-7 until your opponent draws off an empty library and loses the game. Repeat for any remaining opponents.

Case: Cephalid Coliseum is already in play and is tapped. Solution: Chain of Vapor one of your artifacts, sacrifice Cephalid Coliseum to copy Chain of Vapor and bounce another artifact.
