Deck #4 in the Big Dumb Tribal Series

Introduction

This deck started with the Wade Into Battle precon from Commander 2015. I had just got back into Magic, found the Commander format, and fell in love with it. This deck is kind of special to me, too. It was the first deck my then-7-year-old learned to play with. He learned the cards in it really well, and he was able to play it without a lot of guidance or help, knowing how it generally worked. Now that he is a little better at playing Magic, its time for some focus here. I know Giants isn't a particularly powerful tribe, and Boros is generally horrible, but for casual game play, I can make this work. Its also a nice addition to the Big Dumb Tribal Series, which has become a pet project of mine. Let's break it down, shall we?

So, we all know the worst part about playing Boros is generating decent card draw and mana ramp. Let's see if we can address the ramp situation in a semi-efficient way...

I like mana dorks, as they are usually low-costed creatures that can chump block later on. They help with the curve and can be fodder later when things are set up. Thanks to the Mirrodin block, even Boros can have a few mana dorks, in form of Gold Myr, Iron Myr, Plague Myr, Alloy Myr, and Palladium Myr. Paradise Mantle turns any creature into an honorary mana dork. Not Giants, but there are no low-curve Giants, so here we are. Giants only got one acceleration creature for their tribe, and we've got him here, the Stinkdrinker Daredevil, and he's been paired with Urza's Incubator, Hazoret's Monument, and Oketra's Monument to bring down the curve of the deck.

Next up are the mana rocks, and I've included a slew of them, because Boros needs them. Sol Ring, Fellwar Stone, and Boros Signet comes standard. Basalt Monolith, Mind Stone, Worn Powerstone, and Hedron Archive round out the proper mana rocks. A card I've been dying to try out, and that Boros so desperately needed, is Smothering Tithe. It should produce lots of mana rocks.

I'm also running Sword of the Animist, Burnished Hart, and Mana Geyser. I hope in the future to find a really beat up copy of Land Tax I can afford to slot in.

Once again, Boros sucks, er, uh, I mean, Boros is just not as efficient in drawing cards as other color pairings are, so most of the card draw is coming from artifact sources. Book of Rass is kind of like an artifact version of Greed, which is a card I like in black, and if its good enough for , its good enough for . Staff of Nin is high CMC, but its a card every turn once it lands (it may get replaced with Howling Mine eventually). Protector of the Crown introduces the Monarch mechanic into the game.

Now, we get really convoluted with card draw. Mind Stone and Hedron Archive can both be sacrificed to draw cards. Hazoret's Monument gives us the option to rummage. Then we run a handful of cycling lands: Drifting Meadow, Secluded Steppe, Smoldering Crater, and Forgotten Cave. So overall, the card draw package for this deck sucks. I should probably cram in Skullclamp, just because creatures will die, and I'll benefit a little from it. Vanquisher's Banner would be helpful, too.

Card advantage in the deck comes from a favorite of mine, Sunbird's Invocation. This card works so well in Big Dumb Tribal, just because big dumb creatures cost a lot, and casting at a two-for-one rate is just too much fun.

I'm running a fairly standard package here; nothing to really write home about. Swords to Plowshares, Return to Dust, Crib Swap, Fall of the Hammer, and Banishing Light provide single-targeted removal. Earthquake, Disaster Radius, and Wrath of God are my boardwipes.

Some of the Giants provide some removal, as well. Desolation Giant can wipe the board, and Hammerfist Giant, Inferno Titan, and Thundercloud Shaman provide some incidental removal. Kalemne's Captain can clear the board of artifacts and enchantments if need be.

Winning with the Deck

This tribal deck is pretty straightforward in what it wants to do: attack with Giants. Its a simple strategy, but I've got a couple of ways I can go about it. Kalemne, Disciple of Iroas is a rather unique Commander, in that she can really Voltron up without a lot of equipment or aura help, due to having Double Strike and the fact that she gains +1/+1 counters every time I cast pretty much any Giant. So combat has some different options, depending on what is presented in my draws. There are also a few other ways to spread around some damage to help finish off the game.

Kalemne has a few pieces of equipment that can buff her up to really rain in with Commander damage. Blackblade Reforged is great for any big Commander you want to attack with. Loxodon Warhammer is another solid piece of equipment that makes everything look like a nail. I'm seriously considering adding in Grafted Exoskeleton for another alternate win condition. These items will obviously fit well into the hands of any other Giants, too, but can really do the most damage when wielded by Kalemne.

Blade of Selves will help spread around the combat damage, and also provide some nice token fodder that I can use later on.

Impact Tremors deals damage whenever a Giant enters the battlefield, and Bloodshot Cyclops and Brion Stoutarm deal damage by making Giants leave the battlefield in the late game.
There are some decent tribal anthem options available, even though Giants don't really need it. But Boros is good at combat buffs, so play to your strengths, right?

Sunrise Sovereign buffs all the Giants and gives them trample. Oathsworn Giant buffs their butts and gives vigilance, which can be annoying. Honorary Giant Bruse Tarl, Boorish Herder gives someone else Double Strike and Lifelink during combat, and Dragon Throne of Tarkir basically provides an awesome Overrun effect for the tribe. Iroas, God of Victory comes in to give the tribe Menace and provide a flavor win. Throw in Kindred Charge, and we've got plenty of beef to sling around the table.

That's it for Giant Tribal. I'm sure it needs some work, and maybe some more focus, but we'll see how it plays out. Any and all suggestions will be appreciated, as well as any upvotes. Thanks for taking the time to look it over.
