Tempo in modern is currently lacking. Thats why I created this cycle of decks. Counterspells, draw, and preventing your opponent from using their deck to its full potential is where it's at. Follow this slow wearing down up with a miracle costed Entreat the Angels or a Sword of Fire and Ice on Grand Abolisher, Meddling Mage , or Vendilion Clique to attack for lethal. This is Tempo in its purest form.

Welcome to the Tempo Session

Counterspells:

  • Mana Leak My favorite modern legal counterspell, second favorite of all time, just a little behind Force of Will. At two mana, this hard counter that's toll can almost never be payed unless you are facing Tron or 12-post, it can put your opponents on lockdown for a turn.
  • Remand Even though this card is the heart and soul of Tempo counterspells, it doesn't work well for me unless I'm countering my own countered spell back to my hand. That's why it is only at a 1-of.
  • Spell Pierce Can stop any burn that comes my way first turn. Can also stop very many spells early game, and isn't a dead card late game.
  • Spell Snare Stops Tarmogoyf, Bob, Mana Leak, Remand, Snapcaster Mage, and many other 2-drop bombs that are your plain old cup of Joe in Modern.

Draw:

  • Azorius Charm Draw, control, and has amazing synergy with Enteat the Angels. Can save my creature that is dying after being blocked by a death-touch creature, or an attacking creature getting the Path to Exile. Azorius Charm + Entreat the Angels has sealed games before with 24+ life swings.
  • Gitaxian Probe The most underrated spell in the deck. Versatile, just as tempo demands, and controls the opponent, letting me plan my counterspells, and also draws me a card, which adds to it's value and versatility.
  • Remand The draw increases the value of it, but I still don't like it.
  • Serum Visions Sets up for an Entreat the Angels, and is also very powerful in tempo. Starting to get the point of the deck?
  • Sword of Fire and Ice Turns any one of my creatures into a bomb, and also protects them from burn, and blue control spells.

Scry and Draw Control:

  • Augury Owl The newest face on campus, this bird can alert me of a topdeck Entreat the Angels and put it down to the third spot of the library to give me another turn to be able to pump 4 mana into it. It can also cycle one or two cards down to make Entreat the Angels come up faster.
  • Serum Visions Scry comes my way!!!!! Handy draw, + scry. It seems as if Augury Owl summed up this entire section. Well, there is only a total of 7 cards devoted to this...

Misc Control:

  • Azorius Charm Can pop a creature that is blocking one of my buffed up creatures or Angels, or screw over my opponents creature that has about one million enchantments on it (as long as it isn't hexproof) and their next draw.
  • Grand Abolisher A mini-Silence on my turn. No more countering my creature spells, using tricky activated abilities such as Regenerating, or using Flash Faeries. Now that I think about it, a Devoted Druid + Quillspike infinite power deck might be cool.
  • Meddling Mage After countering their best card such as Splinter Twin or Unburial Rites using one of my counterspells or burying it using Vendilion Clique, I can name it and their entire game plan is ruined. Or I can just name an annoying card, such as Inquisition of Kozilek, that I know is in their deck after game one, to stop them from doing much with it.
  • Path to Exile Ruins Tron, 12-Post, and most 3-4 color decks that run very few Basic Lands. No matter what deck, it is absolutely amazing. And, if I need an extra land, I can always exile my own creature to get it. This approach isn't always the best, though.
  • Silence Practically always cast at the beginning of my opponents turn, sealing them shut until I can draw and play Entreat the Angels the next turn. Can also help against another control deck to make them waste a counterspell before I can shove a Grand Abolisher out onto the field.
  • Snapcaster Mage Reuses any control that I have already used. Not really control in itself.
  • Vendilion Clique Alerts me of cards in their hand so I can set up counterspells, and also can bury a heavy hitter. Can turn a dead draw for me into a profit of draw, which makes it versatile.

And that is the end of the Tempo Session - Angel Edition. See you along, Venturer.
