Introduction

Welcome to my primer, before we get started I'd like to introduce you to the deck, and allow you to get a gist of what this is about beforehand. If you don't care, then you can skip straight to the primer. First of all, I'd like to make sure that this decks power level is understood. I have other $100 budget decks for more competitive tables that I will link on the left for you to check out, but this deck is for a midrange table with turn 7-9 wins. This deck escalates fast, and can be VERY scary by turn 6, it can even win by turn 6 sometimes. But most times it will win on turn 8, if that's what your looking for, keep reading. Secondly, this deck DOES have infinite combos, they can be swapped out depending on the table, however. These combos are not the only win-con, this deck will often win by combat damage too, it can make a lot of weenies very fast and beat face. Lastly, I'd like to say that if you want any commander built, or any budget made for any power-level, I'd be happy to assist you if you message me. But without further ado, I won't keep you here any longer, and let you into my primer.

Deck Colors Show

Selesnya = Tokens. This deck has no blue, so it doesn't have many counters, and it has no black, so no tutors. Red isn't super important for this EDH archetype, so I won't mention it. Green is arguably the most important color in EDH, running alongside blue, so at least we have that. White is only here as most token generation is stuck in {G}{W} and so I can't get it elsewhere. Blue is really solid, but I feel with the way my gameplan likes to advance, it might end up with too many dead draws. Due to my budget, I couldn't afford tutors anyway, and if I wanted to win faster, I'd use my Momir Vig budget deck, which wins by turn 4-5 most games with tons of interaction backing it up. In short, green makes up the most important cards in this deck, and white is there to back it up.

The Strategy

General Strategy Show

This deck loves creatures. Like, loves creatures. As well as food too, but everyone loves food. The gameplan is create as much food and as many weenies as possible via the absurd amount of mana we make, then swing in for lethal, gain a bunch of life, and have a ton of fun. The commander isn't enough to do all of that, but he helps a ton, so there are a ton of synergistic creatures to help out with this gameplan. This deck has a really simple strategy, so it wont be too hard to pilot, as long as you play the right cards and use your mana effectively.

Early Game Show

Early game we are pumping out dorks, and if you get a hand with a synergistic card, its even better. We have to get a lot of mana fast, so we can play our commander with the highest X we can achieve. Getting mana with pump us into mid game faster, where we can play our most synergistic cards and have some fun with all the tokens we get to make off our commander. If you manage to make up an X of 4 or more I would say play the commander. 4 food + 4 weenies is pretty good this early, and don't be scared of not being able to play him later, we have some bouncers for that, and we can always chuck him into battle to get him slaughtered (Don't feel bad, to achieve victory, we must make sacrifices).

Mid Game Show

This is the most important part of the game, what happens here determines how late game plays out, and IF the match ever makes it to late game. Your goal: Get your commander out with X = 5+, and play your most synergistic cards. Most draws are either gonna be a land or something good at this point, lands are usually dead to to our powerful manabase, but pretty much everything else except dorks will be useful. Some cards you are looking for: Combo pieces, cards that bounce your commander to replay, cards that make your tokens mana rocks, cards that amplify token creation, cards that search for your combo pieces. Any of those are gonna be solid draws, and even card draw helps for getting even MORE good draws, at this point in the game your turns should be pact, and if your draws are really dead and unlucky, start swinging on people with the army that you DO have.

Late Game Show

Lets hope you either have a combo assembled a or a ton of synergy, one or the other, your final goal is to make an army big enough to wipe your opponents super fast. You should have a ton of mana by now, emptying your hand every draw. Maybe some card draw util like Skullclamp or Peregrin Took to get your stuff ready. These are the turns you want to be going to war, your opponents should be focusing on you, if they aren't, that means your not powerful enough. I mean of course you don't want them to be targeting you, but if you played this right, they WILL be targeting you. Whatever you do, don't play your hand, if you have enough to win, win, don't play extra, you have to save it in case something goes wrong.

Contingency Plan Show

This deck has one final weakness. Board wipes. Say its turn 8, your army is assembled, maybe you got a combo and have infinite tokens, now is your winning turn. Then, out of nowhere, your opponent boardwipes. That's terrible. That's the nightmare scenario for this deck. If you drew a bunch of cards beforehand, maybe you have a prepared card in hand to save your creatures like Wrap in Vigor. If it's an exile boardwipe or you don't have Wrap in Vigor, your next goal is to let your commander go to the command zone and rebuild your structure by recurring essential cards and getting everything else you need. Riftsweeper or Eternal Witness depending on where your cards went will get something essential back. Fauna Shaman will go through what remains of your deck to find anything else you need. Whitemane Lion can bounce anything important right before the wipe. Use the mana you have left in lands/artifacts to get the advantage you can and get the cards back. This deck has some targeted removal that you can play while you try to get set up again.

Mulligans Show

Surprisingly, I put 36 lands jammed into this deck, so sometimes we get some extra lands, but that's OK, as not everything is essential to win. In a hand your looking for 3 lands with like 2 {G} and 1 {W} ideally. 2 {W} and 1 {G} is fine too, though. If your all one color of land take your free mulligan (or 1 card down mulligan depending on your table.) and look in your next hand. The other 4 cards should be a dork, some synergy cards, maybe a mana rock, and maybe some removal. If your table isn't too fast then removal isn't very important, but you might want some if your scared of early development. Honestly, this deck mulligans well, hands of 6 and go just fine most games, pushing it to 5 is a bit risky, but its totally possible, I have never had such bad luck as to have to push it to 5, though.

Matchups and Meta-Swaps Show

Now this isn't entirely a "Meta-Swap" but its more of a budget swap. You may have noticed my maybeboard. I use the maybeboard to show all the amazing cards that are off budget, but still affordable. Those mostly being $10 & $20 singles that are amazing for this deck. I intend to potentially buy those cards at a certain point in time, and when I do this deck will start moving off budget. I will leave a budget list somewhere below once I do move past the $100 threshold that will mirror this exact list. Ill also remove that snipper when the day comes, and anything in reference to the budget list in this primer. Ok, matchups and meta-swaps. This deck is really tough to win on high interaction tables running boardwipes, counters, and a lot of removal. We can take a lot of hits and get back up, but we can't take all of them. Hopefully, on a table like this your deck will be so unlikely to thrive that they mostly ignore you and fight amongst eachother. In this case however, you may want to run more recursion for essential pieces. You could cut a Plains or maybe Fecundity for really any recursion like Regrowth or Bala Ged Recovery  . Just be careful that there is enough interaction at the table that these cards aren't dead draws.

Combos and Other Synergies Show

If your one of those casual tables that outlaws combos, then just remove the combos in this section for anything you please. Originally, the only combo was Rose Cotton of South Lane + Scurry Oak, but after playing some games, I accidentally assembled another combo with Scurry Oak + Peregrin Took + Yotian Dissident. Now, the original combo is far more efficient, so ill only reference that, even though the second is always a possibility if you draw right. Its tutorable with a lot of the multi-creature tutors in green like Tooth and Nail, Uncage the Mangerie, and Shared Summons. Besides that, there is a ton of draw effects in our deck, so really any of those will probably find what your looking for.
