Thriving Rats

Creature — Rat

When Thriving Rats enters the battlefield, you get {E}{E} (two energy counters).

Whenever Thriving Rats attacks, you may pay {E}{E}. If you do, put a +1/+1 counter on it.

i think you should decide if you wanna go for the late game and play your 5 7 drops you have with Ruin Processor and Deathbringer Regent or if you want to go for a beatdown style with the Thriving Grubs Thriving Rats, they sort of contribute to different kind of decks. 22 lands is not a lot with all the 7 drops so maybe go for 24 Prophetic Prism doesn't do alot for you as you are only running 2 colors. Keep it up brewing is my favorite part of magic and this is much better than my first ideas, it's just a bit too unfocused but limits on cards might do that.

Highspire Artisan may be a decent swap out for Thriving Rats. It's got reach, which will solve the air problem... and Fabricate, so it adds a counter or creates a token (to trigger Decoction Module)

lordnova42 on Help with fleshing out my …

I used to play magic back in high school, but quit shortly after, and haven't played in 14 years, until this weekend.
I went to the midnight pre-release, made a R/G deck, but didn't do that good, 16 out of 28. The Sunday pre-release I made a B/R deck, and took 2nd out of 8th (barely had enough players to hold the tournament).
Some of the guys I was playing with invited me to the Tuesday night standard games they play there, so I need to flesh out my deck.
Here's what I made for my second tournament:
7 Mountain
1 Spire of Industry
9 Swamp
1 Aether Poisoner
2 Alley Strangler
1 Consulate Skygate
1 Consulate Turret
1 Daring Demolition
1 Embraal Bruiser
1 Foundry Hornet
1 Frontline Rebel
1 Gonti's Machinations
1 Hijack
1 Irontread Crusher
1 Lathnu Sailback
1 Night Market Lookout
1 Ornithopter
1 Perilous Predicament
1 Prophetic Prism
1 Quicksmith Rebel
1 Salivating Gremlins
2 Shock
1 Spontaneous Artist
1 Thriving Rats
1 Yahenni, Undying Partisan

Here is my entire inventory of magic cards:
Using just the cards I already have, what cards would you recommend adding, or swapping out, to make this a 60 card casually competitive deck?
I do plan on increasing my collection, but I have a very limited disposable income at this time, so can't go out and buy expensive cards, so I'm probably going to stick to picking up a few booster packs each payday.
Thanks!

@gamer.ray The design isn't made to be super fast & win out of the gate but more of a slow build w/ a little bit of ramp with Servant of the Conduit. On T1, I'm hoping to get a Night Market Lookout into play and on T2 get a Servant of the Conduit or Thriving Rats on the field. Thank you for the comment, I appreciate it; I am looking for suggestion on how to make the deck better so if you have any suggestion, without breaking the bank and getting way off the colors Black/Green, I would really appreciate the constructive criticism.

"Whenever (something) attacks..." is the game's standard rules shorthand for "Whenever (something) is declared as an attacker..." An ability like that on Thriving Rats will trigger when attackers are declared, which means it will also resolve during the "declare attackers" step of combat. You have to make your decision about what to do with the energy before the "declare blockers" step begins.

I'm just curious if I am forced to pay the energy cost to put a +1/+1 counter on Thriving Rats & other creatures like it when I declare it as an attacker or if I can wait & see if my opponent will block my creature first to do so? It would seem I should be able to wait since it says when the creature attacks and not specific such as "when the creature is declared as an attacker".

I think to make the deck more consistent, more fabricate will help. Having 3 Kujar Seedsculptor's and 4 Weaponcraft Enthusiast might help. Otherwise, consider replacing Kujar with a heavier card like Elegant Edgecrafters or something lower like Peema Outrider. Highspire Artisan might be a better card than Thriving Rats since there is no other source of energy. Even though it is basically a 2/3 as a 2 drop, in this deck the counters don't mean as much as the fabricate does.

This is a pretty cool deck you have here. But I would personally change a few things.I would take out Thriving Rats Completely and move the Woodweaver's Puzzleknot to the sideboard to add x4 Longtusk Cub and one more Lathnu Hellion.Take out Architect of the Untamed and put in x2 Demon of Dark Schemes, one more Bristling Hydra and one more Thriving Grubs. With those changes I would indeed say that your deck would be ready to ship.
