MINOR REV

Long time no update I know, I had to take a break after lotuscon. Will still be updating guide content at some point.

GHoag Thank you for the good wishes! I intend to record what happens the best I can so I can accurately report on the games. Whatever happens I couldn’t have done as well without you! I do have one big question for you below, if nothing else please help me settle the Palinchron debate.

I got to playtest Tezzeret the Seeker last night and in my limited experience he is VERY good in this deck. I can’t say I would want to see Thran dynamo more than tezzeret in almost any situation. He is an absolute lightning rod. If your opponents know you have dramatic reversal in hand, they have to counter the tezzeret or they will simply lose the game. They can’t wait to see what the ‘-x’ ability grabs (unless they run Stifle or Disallow which isn’t common right now), because the Isochron Scepter just enters the field. If the opponents don’t know you have dramatic reversal in hand it is even more precarious for the opponents, because they don’t know if you are about to win the game or not. Furthermore they should still probably counter it because of the +1 ability alone. Untapping a mana vault every turn is extremely valuable.

Dream Eater performs remarkably well also. It did so well, that it was actually the target of Phantasmal Image at times. Bouncing a Kraum or a Talion to their owners hand feels really good, shutting down their card advantage and setting up my own.

Fabricate is definitely the next tutor to go in if I were to add another one. Still debating what comes out for it. Muddle more likely grabs Isochron Scepter because there is one less artifact tutor than spell tutor. I think I am happy with the tutor base after adding Tezzeret though.

Admittedly submerge is awful against non-green and even 4-5 color decks, because they often don’t run many basic lands except dual-lands. It is definitely a meta choice. Rapid Hybridization is more expensive but meta flexible. Since I don’t know exactly what the meta will be at lotscon and there is no sideboarding allowed I’ll probably go with the more flexible card.

This week my top debate is Palinchron. In the current rev it is starting to feel clunky. Requiring 6 lands on the field seems like a tall order in cEDH, doable only in slower games. He is also clunky because I can’t tutor him or recur him from the graveyard, without exploring the addition of Body Double. Questioning Palinchron also brings Aetherflux Reservoir into question, because Palinchron is the biggest payoff for aetherflux. Without Aetherflux there is no back-up win-con to Thassa’s Oracle which is monumentally important. So taking out Aetherflux is not an option. The Aetherflux/Palinchron wincon is slower than Isoscepter and hard to know when to go for. Though Palinchron is clunky, he is currently the best payoff to aetherflux, and it assists Thoracle. BUT thoracle doesn’t need the help of infinite mana in this deck because I am noticing that I can get to the bottom of the deck before I have 6 lands in play. So I just need a card to be an Aetherflux Reservoir Payoff.

That all said: I posit Shrieking Drake vice Palinchron. This card combos with Defiler of Dreams and Aetherflux Reservoir to have infinite spell casts, life, and damage. Shrieking drake is more innocuous and FAR less expensive therefore making him less risky to run. Shrieking drake also has the versatility of returning a Sphinx to my hand to be cast again. The biggest downside to this choice is that there is less infinite mana combo redundancy than with Palinchron. I think this downside is mitigated by Unesh getting through a lot of the deck very quickly, without needing the help of infinite mana. After briefly exploring the addition of Body Double, I think this course could be doable if we replace Sphinx of Lost Truths. Body double gives me combo safety with Palinchron, makes the combo only require 5 lands in play if I am doing it with Body Double, and has the versatility of copying anything in ANY graveyard. Worth noting, copying things in an opponents graveyard is not often the best choice. The biggest cons here is this makes the deck generally more expensive to play, and body double doesn’t further plan to get through the deck.

I think playtesting is required to know which of the two paths (body double or shrieking drake) is best to take. But with limited time, my gut tells me the Shrieking Drake path is better because it is still lower to the ground, and has synergy with the 20% rule.

Dominaria Remastered Gave me a couple of goodies! Also I made some subs to favor early game power of the deck rather than greeding the later game. CEDH decks are powerful because they are fast. I want UNESH to play as fast as possible.

I updated the version of Urza's Incubator and High Tide because they have foil prints now! Now just waiting for foil prints of Enigma Thief, Riddlemaster Sphinx, and Fierce Guardianship to have a full foil deck!!

I put Sphinx of Lost Truths back in for Sphinx of Clear Skies because it feels better to draw the 3 cards right away rather than waiting for the attack, even if you do have to discard 3 after.

Vexing Sphinx instead of Argent Sphinx due to lower mana cost, early survivability, and card draw that isn't necessarily reliant on UNESH being in play. Further testing needed to see if the discard from vexing sphinx hurts too much or not.

Mystic Remora instead of Kefnet's Monument. Kefnet's monument always feels too slow for what it is actually doing. It is clearly the lowest powered artifact in the deck. In the two turns waiting to play Kefnets monument, Mystic Remora could draw you several cards. These cards could be the difference between winning or losing, being able to ramp in to UNESH or not, having an additional answer faster than you would otherwise. I had a personal crutch with Kefnet's monument because it fit the theme. However Mystic Remora is the clearly stronger card (and has a foil print for the very first time).

When does Followed Footsteps really ever become relevant? It seems to me like you have so much draw, you should never be out of cards in hand to be able to activate this. If you're in that posistion, I dont think Followed Footsteps is going to help all that much. Looks like a fun build. I also feel like there are better things than Sphinx of Lost Truths that would still be on theme for you.

I'm not so good at suggesting removals. I usually throw together crappy decks then play them and write down cards that suck then look for replacements. Eventually I get a good or great deck. I'll give it a try though.

Chancellor of the Spires- if it is in your opening hand cool if not that is a lot of mana for not much. Your opponents will need something worth casting too and no way to really know they will.

Heliod, God of the Sun- I'm not convinced this card does enough for you. The token production is too expensive and there are cheaper ways to do just vigilance.

Sandstone Oracle- You are in blue and running a high average CMC. I would expect you to have the most cards in hand most of the time. Speaking of which more unlimited hand size might be good like Venser's Journal or Thought Vessel. Of the 2 I would probably find a place for vessel first.

Jelenn Sphinx- feels over costed. sphinx don't really need much in the way of buffs since they start pretty good.

Sphinx of Jwar Isle- this is just very vanilla. Not always a bad thing but meh.

Sphinx of Lost Truths- over costed.

Again you are probably better off doing some testing then seeing what under-preforms for you but I'm not fond of the listed cards.

Yesterday on The Sphinxes are coming!

Urgh, had a whole thing typed out here and then accidentally closed the browser. That's annoying.

The deck looks neat, is it something you've played with already or still in the planning stages? Also just FYI it's Sphinxes, not Sphinx's. :P

There are a number of utility cards coming in the new commander 2017 set for tribal decks that I'm sure would help you out, but considering they're not out yet I'll stick with cards that actually exist. Like Consecrated Sphinx. Also I'm not sure what your budget is so I'm just gonna throw out some kinda expensive suggestions in the mix.

I'm sure a Cavern of Souls and possibly a Boseiju, Who Shelters All would be nice for some extra protection. As for cycling lands, in a mono blue deck that doesn't care about deserts, both Remote Isle and Lonely Sandbar are strictly better than Desert of the Mindful. On the topic of lands, if you like artifacts, there are some more neat inclusions that might interest you: Academy Ruins, Mishra's Workshop (crazy expensive), Sequestered Stash, Tolarian Academy.

Also, considering you're running Paradox Engine and can potentially tutor for it, I might recommend Mana Crypt, Grim Monolith or Basalt Monolith, maybe instead of Ur-Golem's Eye or something.

It sort of goes against the artefact theme you're running but I personally prefer Mystic Remora or Rhystic Study to Mind's Eye, it puts the tax on the opponent instead of you. You mightn't always draw cards off them, but they're somewhat cheaper in multiplayer games and can force opponents to chose to pay the tax instead of good spells, which is subtly very nice.

Argent Sphinx is actually great in here I'm just realising. Neat.

It's down to preference and playstyle more than anything, but maybe (considering you're running Warden of Evos Isle) you might want to run Icefall Regent instead of Frost Titan.

You also might want to run Shapesharer instead of Mistform Ultimus, it can target itself with its ability and also the number of other nice shapeshifters you've got in your deck.

There isn't a lot of cycling in the deck so I'm not really sure what Curator of Mysteries or Ominous Sphinx offer the deck aside from being sphinxes. Some other fun sphinxes I like are Master of Predicaments and Sphinx Ambassador, and some others that might synergise with your commander or otherwise offer good card advantage are Consecrated Sphinx, Horizon Scholar, Prognostic Sphinx, Sphinx of Jwar Isle, Sphinx of Lost Truths, Sphinx of Uthuun, Vexing Sphinx, Windreader Sphinx.

There are a lot of great sphinxes actually, whew.

Anywho, good luck with it!
