Ophilias on Could Use Some Feedback on …

Hey everyone! I've got a White/Black Cleric deck that I'm wanting some advice on. As you'll see, it's largely focused on reducing damage and life gain. The current win conditions are pretty much limited to Profane Prayers and Doubtless One.

What I'm hoping for here is some advice on possibly streamlining my win conditions as well as any obvious improvements that can be made to my efficacy at reducing incoming damage. I do have more Battletide Alchemist on order since I really like them.

Any help is greatly appreciated! Deck link since that's probably important

list of possilbe clerics to consider:

Heliod, God of the Sun - okay, not a cleric, but makes cleric tokens

Alms Collector - good card draw engine in EDH - prevents players from drawing their deck in one go also

Auriok Champion - linear upgrade from Soul Warden - resists removal

Auriok Replica - good sac for anti-commander damage, fits cleric type, colorless to cast. not super amazing, but worth mentioning

Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim - not all that useful until you gain some life, then amazing removal. and 2/3 deathtouch for 2 isn't bad either

Battlefield Medic - damage prevention based on clerics. nothing to special, but tribal themed, so I mention it here.

Beloved Chaplain - evasion that's hard to top - can't be blocked by creatures, can't be removed by creatures.

Blind Zealot - sacs to destroy target creature when it hits a player, good for general

Cabal Archon - sac outlet? check. Cleric tribal? check. sadistic grin? double check.

Cabal Executioner - on par with blind zealot - lacks the evasion, but doesn't sac to activate. mixed bag, but not horrible

Children of Korlis - sacs to revert life total to start of turn? yes please

Custodi Lich - grants Monarch, and forces creature sac on play and when you regain it. seems good.

Custodi Soulcaller - requires a few players to be super amazing, but still worthwhile even if all you get back is Children of Korlis

Daru Spiritualist - not quite pro- red, but helps agaisnt spot removal for entire tribe. bonus if paired with Shaman en-Kor

Devout Chaplain - most clerics are humans, exile is good. enough said.

Eight-and-a-Half-Tails - good protection for your side of the field.

Entomber Exarch - cleric that can reanimate or force pitch from opponents. not gamebreaker, but solid card with options

Frontline Medic - clerics are indistructable as long as 3 swing? seems good

Giver of Runes - really should be vodka-aunt of runes, but w/e, still good

High Priest of Penance - great to chump with, better with aethreos, best when indistructable

Kor Sanctifiers - decent artifact / enchantment removal on a cleric body, not much else to say.

Leonin Arbiter - the staple of death & taxes and hate bears is, in fact, a cleric. seems useful.

Leonin Relic-Warder - fiend hunter for artifacts & enchantments, not much else to say.

Mikaeus, the Lunarch - cleric that slowly buffs your side

Order of Whiteclay - recusion cleric. not as useful once it gets vigilence, so fair warning.

Pious Evangel  Flip - sac outlet that transforms into a mini- blood artist, is cleric.

Pontiff of Blight - mass extort is disgusting. seven toughness is hard to remove.

Ravos, Soultender - recursion + steroids = win

Remorseful Cleric - mass graveyard remval + evasion is good

Shaman en-Kor - this guy is bonkers, and with any form of damage prevention makes your side nigh unkillable

Sin Collector - exiles instants & sorceries, solid card. never returns them either. probably is on a wanted list in some libraries for back charges

True Believer - if you don't want people to target you, ivory mask with legs is a cleric too

Tymna the Weaver - less useful in duels, but solid for mass card draw otherwise

Vile Deacon - cleric tribal lord for black, comparible to doubtless one

Weathered Wayfarer - land tax on legs. still a cleric

Whipgrass Entangler - ghostly prison based on clerics for mana, but single target per use

Whisper, Blood Liturgist - creature recusion that nukes for 6 with general out, or mass reanimation if opponen't don't take it.

Profane Prayers - not an X spell, but cleric tribal nuke seems kinda on-theme.

Cutting the lame lifegain instawins. I think winning with slightly more jank things will be more fun, and since I often only have 1 opponent it's okay to have less full-table kills

Thank you for the card suggestions. A few that I'm not familiar with. Some I just recently acquired, but I haven't had a chance to update my deck yet.

What I'm doing with this deck is using the clerics to produce tokens and gain life. In some cases, such as Profane Prayers, use the number of clerics to do direct damage. The design of this deck does work, it's just a little slow. Which is why I asked for suggestions to make it faster. And what you said about cards being pricey, that is why I'm looking for alternatives. If I had the extra cash to spend I would have Gilded Lotus and Lotus Vale in my deck already.

There are cards that I could easily replace (such as Accursed Witch  Flip), but for the most part, the creatures I've chosen were chosen because of how they work or their power/toughness vs mana cost. An example, you suggested Fiend Hunter over Avacynian Missionaries  Flip. Well, for one mana more than what Fiend Hunter costs Avacynian Missionaries  Flip starts as a 3/3 and after transforming becomes a 4/4, then you get to add on the bonuses of the equipment. And if you have Neglected Heirloom  Flip (I know it isn't listed in my deck, but I plan on putting it in at some point) equipped on it, that bonus increases.

In this case, the mana cost reduction cards, would come in handy, and would work well with Edgewalker, which is already in my deck.

I am definitely going to look into some of the other cards you suggested. I liked the options they offered.

Changed some cards, added Athreos and Heliod (creates cleric tokens) and some more removal. Adjusted the mana base slightly, added Mutavault (can become a cleric). Took out Profane Prayers since it relies on having creatures in play to be effective, it's a bit unreliable.

looks cool, man! You might like Profane Prayers. also, Transcendent Master gets out of hand faster than you might think :) Stay frosty!

Remove these creature cards: Whipgrass Entangler, Skirsdag High Priest,Rotlung Reanimator, Pulsemage Advocate, Pontiff of Blight, Order of Whiteclay, Edgewalker, Drana's Emissary, Celestial Gatekeeper, Cabal Archon, Beacon of Destiny, Battletide Alchemist, Banisher Priest, and maybe even Athreos, God of Passage. Most of them are in the deck to create a cleric subtheme, and provide little benefit by themselves. You could replace them with much more useful cards, either for threat generation, comboing out, reanimation, or filtering through your deck. Once they're out of the deck Door of Destinies stops being worth the slot. Profane Prayers is also an iffy card that only plays on a subtheme that is dragging down the deck.Vivid Marsh and Vivid Meadow are slowing your deck down, since they only tap for one color of mana and provide no interaction with other cards in the deck they're not worth the cost of coming in tapped. Westvale Abbey  Flip is not worth the cost to transform it, essentially 6 mana, 5 creatures, and sacrificing a land for a creature that doesn't change the game that much is very iffy. And using it to create creature tokens is even more iffy.

Cards like Animate Dead, Necromancy, Victimize, Nim Deathmantle, Mimic Vat, Phyrexian Delver, Marshal's Anthem, and Sheoldred, Whispering One can set you up with a nice reanimation package and help to maximize your card advantage.

As for replacing some of your creatures Reveillark is a very good add, and his best friend Karmic Guide feeds into a reanimation package and allows for you to go infinite.Leonin Relic-Warder can generate infinite ETB and LTB effects when it's reanimated by Animate Dead or Necromancy (not the temporary exile effect though, that's used on the enchantment used to reanimate it). And it can be killed off by Ayli to permanently exile and pesky artifacts or enchantments your opponents have out there.Blood Artist makes an opponent less likely to boardwipe out of fear of taking a bunch of damage, and it can be abused to kill everyone off fairly easily.Vizkopa Guildmage is an absolute powerhouse. He combos, he synergizes, he's decent by himself. A wise opponent will use their valuable removal getting rid of this guy, a less wise opponent will learn to fear him after he costs them a couple of games.Tree of Perdition by itself this card will reduce a single opponent's life total to very little. You can then gain a bunch of life by sacrificing the tree. With Vizkopa Guildmage, Sanguine Bond or a similar effect out can kill everyone off by sacrificing this tree. And if all you do is a gain a bunch of life and almost kill off a single opponent, the life gain will enable you to exile permanents with Ayli's second ability.Felidar Sovereign is a card that an Ayli deck can easily win with, but that a lot of people have problems running. It's really good, and it wins games, but I get if you choose not to use it.Grim Haruspex is a card you should run, drawing a lot of cards is good and with a couple of infinite death combos in the deck you can draw until you get what you need.Smothering Abomination pretty much the same reasons as the Haruspex.Kokusho, the Evening Star this dragon does a lot. It gains you a lot of life, and it hurts all of your opponents. Slap your Gift of Immortality on him and watch as your opponents scramble to find an answer to the 5 life a turn, every turn (even theirs).Sidisi, Undead Vizier is a nice tutor that you can use multiple times through reanimation. And black excels at reanimation.

Stuff like Ashnod's Altar, Skullclamp, Sword of the Animist, Aura of Silence, and Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth all fit well in Ayli deck too.

My Ayli deck runs pretty smoothly, and you might get some ideas from it.

I'm curious with all your draw how you don't deck yourself?
What about Elixir of Immortality or Kozilek, Butcher of Truth?

Also how do you tutor demons if they are in your hand?
What about Scroll Rack to put Demons back or Zombie Infestation to toss your Demons into your graveyard then cheat them out with Living Death? Another way you could cheat out demons from your hand is Cryptic Gateway if you have Skirsdag High Priest making demon tokens.

Dark Prophecy and Graveborn Muse Can start killing you very quickly if you don't have Blood Artist or Gray Merchant of Asphodel who keeps getting sac'ed and brought back by Hell's Caretaker.

Other Thoughts:
Check out this new planeswalker Liliana, Heretical Healer  Flip which shares an even better version of our generals ability.
Also for insane mana ramp Black Market gets big quick!
I hate people digging in their libraries. Hello Ob Nixilis, Unshackled He can also become a huge beat stick with his built in Sadistic Glee.
As well for added fun Lord of the Void because cheating your enemies creatures from their library is good fun.
Profane Prayers has flavor, but Exsanguinate hits everyone and with a fat Black Market or Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx after you Thrumming Stone and cheat 30 Shadowborn Apostles out for 30+ devotion could end the game right there.
If all else fails you could Mortal Combat ftw!
