Vraska's Scorn

Sorcery

Target opponent loses 4 life. You may search your library and/or graveyard for a card named Vraska, Scheming Gorgon, reveal it, and put it into your hand. If you search your library this way, shuffle it.

Some thoughts/suggestions:

  • modern decks typically don’t want to run more than 4 cards costing 4 mana, and often run nothing above this cost (this is to try avoid the deck becoming slow/clumsy). You’ve got 8 cards costing 4-or-more, which is a bit high. I’d recommend ditching all of Dearly Departed, Vraska's Scorn, and Vraska, Scheming Gorgon, because all of these cards are extremely weak for their mana cost.

  • just from a mana efficiency persoective i’d also ditch Forebear's Blade (6 mana for +3/+0 is a pretty bad return), and Paladin Class (there are better white enchants, like Honor of the Pure).

  • having a 12/12 Plains/Swamp split when almost all your creatures need 2 white mana on turn 2-or-3 seems really unideal, as you won’t be able to reliably achieve that. A better Plains/Swamp split might be 18/6 - though realistically if you only have access to basic lands, then your deck would be a lot stronger & more consistent just being mono-white.

  • You need ways to interact with your opponent, as just letting them do what they want is a recipe for disaster. I’d recommend adding in Path to Exile and/or Lay Down Arms.

  • I get what you’re trying to do with Basilisk Collar, but an all-first-strike deck is already incredibly strong defensively (because you can double-block). It feels more cute-than-useful, imo.

Neat concept! I love decks that build around flashy but not very powerful cards (I did the same thing a while back with the original Vraska... the deck wasn't very good but it was hella fun!), and this looks like it has potential!

I assume the Mastermind's Acquisition is just in there to help find Vraska? If that's the case, why not just run the Vraska-specific tutor that they printed in her deck - Vraska's Scorn ? Same cost and it domes your opponent for an extra 4. I know it's not a good card, but honestly neither is the planeswalker you're working with here. It's all for fun, so why not lean into it?

And for your creatures I'd consider leaning a bit harder into first strike - that way you get to take better advantage of the +1/+0 from Vraska's plus ability. Specifically I'd maybe consider cutting 1-2 Valiant Knights and 1-2 lands to run 2-4 Knight of Malice (since you have far more white permanents than black ones so it'll come online much faster/more often than Knight of Grace) in the main. A 4/2 first strike pro-white is no joke!

Whatever you decide to do, good luck and have fun!

Hi tdmurrel, thank you for your feedback. Your group sounds like a fun bunch of people. I've been considering dropping Vraska's Scorn for a while now. It is noticeably the weakest card in the deck. However I've been strict on myself in maintaining a "Vraska" theme to the deck, so I only wanted to replace it with another "Vraska card", so to speak. I've decided to swap in Costly Plunder in its place, since it features Vraska on the card art. Another option is Golden Demise, but that appears to have counter synergy with the early creatures in the deck. Please let me know your thoughts on this.

Interesting deck idea you have here. Main cards I think are questionable are Vraska, Scheming Gorgon and Vraska's Scorn. These cards feel more like win more cards that don't do much unless you have something function on board. Would change into early control style cards like Fatal Push, Cast Down, or Vicious Offering; or you could add some draw style cards like Opt to help you dig for Tetsuko Umezawa, Fugitive or your enchantment hate because you have been bound.

As for your mainboard anti enchantment cards I would suggest cutting those in favor of Cast Out as the card can be used against enchantments and can be flexible enough to lock down other cards if needed. It also has the ability to be cycled for emergency draw power. If you are worried about cast out being locked down by the binding as well then you can always split up the copies with Ixalan's Binding as well. You can always keep the extra enchantment hate in the side when you know it will be a problem. This will help your balance your game answers in your mainboard for non-white/non-enchantment using decks.

I am not sure if the Vampire cards will get in the way of the rats or not. The goal of the deck is to try and keep playing rats to swarm over your opponent with unblockable creatures that end the turn in an attack or two. Would still keep and maybe go for 4 Legion's Landing in the deck as it gives you a one drop you would be lacking otherwise.

Just remember in the die you may want to run cards like Duress to pull control out of hand early and protect your attacks from Settle the Wreckage . You also might want to consider Essence Scatter for the red matchups to stop Goblin Chainwhirler from getting on the board and wiping your creatures out.

You could also try this deck without the white and going green to include cards like Naturalize and Heroic Intervention. I think your white variant is fine in comparison to the green.

Best of luck with the deck.

It seems that you maybe a new player or new to standard but your deck has too many singletons. You want that your deck is as consistent as possible and by first you can choose what you want your deck to do.

Example your deck is BR (rakdos) so it is usually really aggressive so you are seeking cards that cost max 4 mana (With few exceptions).

You should take out Wily Goblin Deadeye Tracker <- (To side) Pitiless Plunderer Lightning-Rig Crew <- (maybe for side) Angrath's Marauders Angrath's Fury Blazing Volley Brass's Bounty Hijack Morbid Curiosity Vraska's Scorn Wrangle Dual Shot Skulduggery Vona's Hunger Treasure Map  Flip Vanquisher's Banner Revel in Riches and Blood Sun and Walk the Plank . You should switch Angrath, Minotaur Pirate and Vraska, Scheming Gorgon for Chandra, Torch of Defiance if you are made out of money and if not then Angrath, the Flame-Chained will just done fine

For good 1 drop you should add 4x Fanatical Firebrand because he is useful even when games get long because sometimes that 1 dmg that he can do directly to face mattes some time. 3 more Dire Fleet Captain because they are hard to kill when you got 2-3 pirates attacking with it. 1 Kari Zev, Skyship Raider because she is reliable 2 drop because she is hard to kill and brings buddy when attacking and 2 Captain Lannery Storm because she has haste and ramps little bit for you to make wider board or faster Angrath. 1 more Dire Fleet Neckbreaker should do fine because she doesn't have evasive abilites but buffs pirates so much that they become even more menacing. (Hazoret would be amazing in aggro deck but she isn't pirate so you don't have to include her if you don't want / can't]

For other spells 1 more Lightning Strike 2 Vraska's Contempt 2 Kari Zev's Expertise 1 Vance's Blasting Cannons  Flip and 3 Shock (or 1 Magma Spray and 2 Shock ) and if you are able to get then 4 Fatal Push and try to put them in as you like

And add 1 more land and if you can you should get 4 Canyon Slough because they make decks more consistent thanks to that cycling

For side take out Blight Keeper Brass's Bounty Costly Plunder Dire Fleet Captain Dire Fleet Neckbreaker Revel in Riches Skittering Heartstopper Storm Fleet Arsonist Sure Strike Wily Goblin because simply they don't do much in most sitsuations

You should add 2 Abrade 1-2 Magma Spray (depending on how many sprays you have in mainboard) 2 Deadeye Tracker 2 Lightning-Rig Crew 3 Blazing Volley or Dual Shot and 2-3 Duress

These are just my thoughts and you don't need to change anything because I say so but these are what I recommend for your deck. If you want / need I can explain why I would take those cards out that I mention and what I would put in

Have you considered Vraska's Contempt over Vraska's Scorn? Also I think Fatal Push would be better in the main board.
