AstroAA on How do you build Karametra?

I used to run a Karametra, God of Harvests combo deck ages ago when Paradox Engine was legal. I updated it last summer, but it's still kind of mediocre and I would definitely redo it again if I had any interest in the deck. Regardless, if you're interested - my decklist is here:

[EDH][PRIMER] Karametra's Garden of Eden

Commander / EDH* AstroAA

SCORE: 10 | 9 COMMENTS | 1737 VIEWS | IN 4 FOLDERS

I did not go with the landfall mechanic as I'm not particularly a fan of it outside of Lotus Cobra. IMO she's best built abusing ETB triggers with cards like Aluren and Cloudstone Curio.

Cards like Whitemane Lion, Kor Skyfisher, and Emancipation Angel are absolutely phenomenal in Karametra. They bounce themselves, allowing you to play them again and get more lands. With Aluren out, you can get every single Forest/Plains out of your deck in a single turn.

Cards like Wall of Blossoms and Wall of Omens are great with Aluren + Cloudstone Curio because you could essentially draw your entire deck in one go. Albeit you'd need to be careful and specify how far you should go with this otherwise you'd deck yourself, but that's beyond the point - still a powerful draw effect.

With Aluren, Cards like Sandsteppe Outcast and Hanged Executioner are awesome for getting an arbitrarily large number of tokens, as the token on the ETB effect can bounce the creature that generated it with Cloudstone Curio. This can pay out in several different ways - mainly infinite mana with Ashnod's Altar and/or Phyrexian Altar through sacing the token, and infinite damage/winning the game on the spot with Blasting Station and sacing the token. You could also create infinite tokens with Oketra's Monument and any of the self-bounce creatures if you just have Aluren out.

I also really liked cards like Reveillark, Renegade Rallier, Destiny Spinner, Eternal Witness, Aura Shards, Bygone Bishop, Temur Sabertooth, and Rhonas's Monument.

Personally, if you wanted to play a straight-up ETB combo deck, I think Trostani, Selesnya's Voice is a better general due to having far easier access to using Aetherflux Reservoir, (generate a ton of life with Aluren + Whitemane Lion, shoot people with the Death Star). Karametra, God of Harvests is nice for land filtering, but you only run so many lands in the deck she becomes kind of useless later on in the game - hence why I've kind of lost interest in her. In addition, what TypicalTimmy said is very true - if you rush out to an early lead in lands with her, you often become a target. IF you wanted to build Karametra, God of Harvests still, I would highly recommend going combo and including a myriad of methods to win - such as combat damage, Walking Ballista combos, and Blasting Station combos.

Maybe you'd like creatures like Ampryn Tactician and Leonin Armorguard , or Seller of Songbirds and Sandsteppe Outcast ? The first two are decent bodies that make all your other bodies even more "decent-er". The last two are some of many creatures that put out flying tokens. I know you said you didn't want to do the traditional Tokens strategy here, but having flying chumps is never a bad thing.

Also if you can blink Stonehorn Dignitary reliably, that's pretty bad-ass.

First off, congrats on getting a fiance that plays magic! Many of us wish we were that lucky :)

Secondly, the cube is looking good right now. I don't think that cutting Sandsteppe Outcast was necessarily the right choice, but I can see why you came to the decision.

Here's my actual question: what direction are you taking G/B with the release of RNA? I get that self-mill and midrange are still major archetypes, but which are you aiming to be more predominant?

Seller of Songbirds instead of Sandsteppe Outcast?

-2 Dragon Fodder and definitely +2 Impact Tremors. or -2 something else. but you want to see an Impact Tremors as often as possible in this deck, I would think.

Potential Additions

  1. Panharmonicon is at least worth testing since you've upped your ETB count.

  2. Reveillark seems pretty good here, actually.

  3. Goblin Matron is definitely worth it as another copy of Kiki, which is your best "flicker" enabler and a nice combo piece. It gets enough other things to never be dead.

  4. Boros Charm is pretty good to save your dudes form board wipes or as a surprise double-strike win (you can give other people's commanders double strike, too). If there are a few voltron decks, that's probably worth it.

  5. Flickerwisp isn't the worst.

Potential Removals

  1. I know it's a pet card, but Thopter Engineer seems really low-impact in this deck since you're very low on artifact creatures/tokens. Sandsteppe Outcast has similar problems.

  2. Geist-Honored Monk is too slow IMO, since it has no evasion.

  3. Fervor also might be too slow, but it's easier to cast and harder to destroy than Hammer of Purphoros. Not sure if you even need the effect, really.

  4. I think Rally the Ancestors will be too expensive to cast for the cards you actually want. It might end up being dead pretty often.

  5. Dolmen Gate might be worth a card here, since you already have Frontline Medic and Iroas, God of Victory. Do you really need three copies of that effect? At least the other two have bodies most of the time.

Battle Screech is Pauper legal thanks to Vintage Masters, and is a pretty powerful token generator. Would swap in for Sandsteppe Outcast.

It all depends on the competitiveness you are going for. I am not the best helper when it comes to the competitive scene since i am more of a casual player, so i won't be able to help you make it really competitive if that's what you are going for with the build.

If you are a casual player, i would recommend running cards you enjoy and would love to use.

However i will come with my thoughts on the cards :) Depending on your budget i would run 2-3 copies of Geist of Saint Traft (Keep in mind the legend rule when playing). Selfless Spirit i think you are primarily running it for it's sacrifice ability than the body itself.

Eidolon of Countless Battles seems pretty fun as a one of could possibly be a big threat in the late game

Sandsteppe Outcast Seems slow, but i can see the funny and potential combo with Anointed Procession.

For me Daxos of Meletis seems pretty solid to with just the first ability. Think of the combo between Daxos of Meletis and Invocation of Saint Traft or Eidolon of Countless Battles boosting him. Invocation of Saint Traft could be a possible suit for the deck to?

Found some other cards you may like Geist-Honored Monk (just saw you had suggested it, but gonna keep it here xD), Mausoleum Wanderer, Rattlechains and Nebelgast Herald.

Ok, I think I'm getting pretty far. I do have a couple questions. First, how many Geist of Saint Traft should I run? Right now I have 2 of them and that seems pretty good. But I want all the suggestions I can get. Second, do you think that Selfless Spirit is worth it. It doesn't seem to pull its weight. It is a sorry and a flyer for cheap which is why I am so much on the fence about it. But there there are other cards who might work. I was thinking of either running a single Eidolon of Countless Battles, or two coppies of either Sandsteppe Outcast or Daxos of Meletis (preferably Sandsteppe Outcast)
