Sanctifier en-Vec

Creature — Human Cleric

Protection from black and from red ((Remember the acronym debt.) This can't be damaged, enchanted, equipped, blocked or targeted by anything black or red. Anything black or red attached to this immediately falls off.)

When this enters the battlefield, exile all cards that are black or red from all graveyards.

If a black or red permanent, spell, or card not on the battlefield would be put into a graveyard, exile it instead.

With the upcoming Mh3, there’s two cards you may want to consider fitting into this brew: Sorin of House Markov, and Guide of Souls.

I really strongly feel like your mainboard needs 22 (maybe even 23?) lands instead of 21.

As far as your sideboard goes, it feels like you are particularly weak to the opponents interaction and/or combo strategies. In that vein i’d run something like:

————————————

In relation to some of the cards already in your sideboard selection, i’d suggest against them for the following reasons:

  • Stony Silence doesn’t do enough to artifacts decks, as many don’t use activated abilities too often - namely this hurts Scales, but not-really Affinity.

  • Inquisition of Kozilek is good against control and some kinds of combo. But only being able to hit 3-or-less mana makes this awkward against both. Combo decks you should already have answers for with my above suggestions. I don’t see this deck beating control whatever it does, so i don’t think there’s point trying to fight it with this card.

  • Kor Firewalker is only useful versus burn. Your deck should have absolutely no problem beating burn naturally, so this isn’t needed.

  • Sanctifier en-Vec feels like overkill if you’re already running Rest in Peace. Furthermore, it’s more red-hate in a deck already generally positioned well against a lot if red gameplans

  • Ghost Quarter i’m not sure why you’re running this? I assume for tron, but this really won’t slow them down enough to matter, and is more likely to mess with your own tempo.

  • Surgical Extraction is generally only good versus combo, but requires being in a deck with a LOT if ways to force discard/mill so you can reliably exile what you need to.

nbarry223 on Ways to STOP T0 GRIEF/FURY …

While not a t1 or t0 answer, I’ve always liked copy creatures like Phyrexian Metamorph to answer Fury, letting us 2 for 1 on the backend essentially.

As far as answers, the best I’ve got is Surge of Salvation or Sanctifier en-Vec/Defense Grid/Void Mirror/Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines if we can ignore the turn premises.

As far as other cards, there’s things like Silence that stops them from casting further spells if played before they resolve, otherwise the reanimate effects can just be used in response.

There’s also all the various 1 mana counters. I don’t really know of a good answer to the turn 1 double Grief - it is pretty suppressive honestly.

No prob dnthymamai! Totally understandable regarding the infinite combos; I know they can be polarizing among players. If your playgroup ever changes their mind, I'd recommend adding that combo for sure.

If you're looking for more graveyard/aristocrats hate, I'd recommend:

I think you can probably swap out Changeling Outcast for something else. Since Burakos can fill any role in the party, they have less need for Changelings than Nalia de'Arnise might. Zhentarim Bandit or Preacher of the Schism could be some options for more Treasure support or draw. Preacher as a 2/4 with Deathtouch for 3 mana alone is pretty nice.

nbarry223 on Sideboard Tech vs. Scam

My game plan is completely different from scam. I am mainly asking for a combo deck, so the early targeted discard hurts, and I don’t have too much in the way of early blockers, so they can get in early with Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer and snowball sometimes.

Blood Moon also hurts a bit, but can be played around or removed. Their game plan almost feels meant to counter my specific deck (amulet titan) so was just wondering if anyone has some out of the box solutions. As of right now, my best options are removal or Veil of Summer but was wondering if there were any “silver bullets” like Sanctifier en-Vec which essentially invalidates their whole deck (can’t be removed beyond Engineered Explosives and freely blocks Fury).

What's some good sideboard tech vs. the Scam Deck? (R/B aggro with discard/moon and MH2 elementals)

Asking for a mainly green deck with access to splashing any color(s).

I've been toying around with the idea of Darksteel Myr as a blocker that they can't remove because Sanctifier en-Vec is a little too much commitment to to come down early. A more realistic option to help out is Veil of Summer since it has other uses.

Is there any other options that would help improve matchups vs. this deck, don't worry about colors when suggesting.

colinplaysmagic89 on $60 Mono Red Prowess with Upgrade Path to Murktide

I threw together the sideboard for the $60 version based on what I could fit into the budget, but here's a general explanation of the sideboard choices:

Abrade Abrade doubles as a removal spell against creature decks and artifact hate against decks like Hammertime, Affinity, and Hardened Scales. While you can also snag a turn one Amulet of Vigor on the draw against Titan, this might be too slow. Abrade also deals with Chalice of the Void

Dragon's Claw Whenever you are in a matchup where you need to race, Dragon's Claw gains you a ton of life. Bring it in in the mirror and against burn, for sure.

Kozilek's Return This card serves a few different purposes. Because it only deals two damage, your prowess creatures will survive the spell, meaning you can use this to clear the board in matchups like Hammertime, Yawgmoth, or Creature based decks. But the spell is also colorless, meaning that it can kill creatures with protection from Red like Sanctifier en-Vec

Smash to Smithereens This gives us some extra reach against hammer and burn while also destroying their shadowspear or getting rid of an artifact blocker.

Unholy Heat This is a removal spell for matchups like Yawgmoth where we need to get through blockers or anything where we need to kill something. This can also take care of a primiveal titan if we have delirium.

Pyrite Spellbomb This card is more Sanctifier En-Vec protection.

Tormod's Crypt Zero mana graveyard hate. Because it's zero mana, it also is good for getting prowess/delirum triggers.

Soul-Guide Lantern One mana graveyard hate that gets past leyline of sanctity, or deals with a single target in the graveyard and then cantrips.

nbarry223 on In defense of Veil of …

I would actually argue that powerful but niche cards like Veil of Summer and Aether Gust is something the format needs more of. They aren't strictly better than other counterparts, but give some "narrow" hate that can be quite powerful in the right matches. We need more hate-cards in the format which are relevant in this manner. Wedge hate cards like this are great, and it's a shame that they aren't all at the same power level.

Cards like Devout Decree, Celestial Purge, Noxious Grasp, Deathmark, Fry, and Rending Volley just aren't powerful enough. White does get some decent creatures that fit the mold like Auriok Champion and Sanctifier en-Vec but those require a little more than a slight splash.

So in conclusion, rather than argue that Veil of Summer (a fixed Autumn's Veil) is too powerful, I would argue that the counterparts from other colors are just too weak, being outclassed by normal removal options.

We need more narrow cards that fit into what the color wants to do, and hate against what its enemy colors want to do better. For example, maybe some kind of Searing Blaze type of effect (deals with creatures and goes face) for against , and a effect against that punishes them for swarming and is a form of removal.
