Orcish Bowmasters

Creature — Orc Archer

Flash

When Orcish Bowmasters enters the battlefield and whenever an opponent draws a card except the first one they draw in each of their draw steps, Orcish Bowmasters deals 1 damage to any target. Then amass Orcs 1. (Put a +1/+1 counter on an Army you control. It's also an Orc. If you don't control an Army, create a 0/0 black Orc Army creature token first.)

Yeah, it's a lot of the same ol shit, defending against Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Orcish Bowmasters, Deathrite Shaman, The One Ring, Necropotence, Omniscience, ya know. When I go up against something else, I'm usually pleasantly surprised. I mostly play aggro builds and BO1 matches, I like the games to be quick and fun as I don't have a whole lot of free time, and def not enuf for a BO3 control match. I could get into some Brawl again tho. I do have a bunch of EDH decks built on paper, and a couple brawl decks on Arena that I haven't touched in quite a while, but I do enjoy the format. I sent you a friend request on Arena, Same username as on here.

Memory Jar, Dark Deal work well with Sheoldred. Orcish Bowmasters adds as well. Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor are more competitive. Jet Medallion for mana.

4 Ragavan is probably necessary maindeck, probably cut the street wraiths for them since wraith isnt really needed in shadow decks anymore

I don't like 4 Sheoldred, I'd run 1-2 molten collapse and 1 angraths rampage main and 1 side instead (hits one ring). They also add more sorceries for delirium.

Don't understand what Ob Nixilis is doing in the sideboard? And Nihil Spellbomb is better than Soul Guide Lantern most of the time. I also do not like shattering spree in such a black heavy deck. Also have 3 basic swamps you can just run Blood Moon over alpine moon, especially since alpine does nothing against titan. Hidetsugu Consumes All  Flip decent sideboard card, rhinos is not popular atm but there might be a new leyline scion rhinos deck, and of course its good against saga and affinity.

Maybe you can run Orcish Bowmasters, but the creature slots are already really cramped so I'm not sure. But its definitely better than Spyro. Maybe a single Tarfire for nethergoyf.

Fable of the Mirror-Breaker  Flip is pretty slow but its an enchantment for nethergoyf and basically always a 2 for 1, good in the grindy matchups.

I think the flares will probably be less powerful than Fierce Guardianship but decks will have access to both, and it does feel very snowballey in nature. It's like, Monologue Tax is much worse than Smothering Tithe but many decks can just play both.

My main problem with 0 cmc interactions is that having a lot of them makes board assessment less and less possible. You could usually look at somebody tapped out and say, well, at most they have one Force of Will so odds are they don't have it, but when there are enough 0 mana interactions in enough colors, it becomes impossible to reason out your best plays.

Part of me thinks that the problem stems from how relatively limited bans are in commander. The RC really wants to have rule 0 do most of the work, and then by having a lot of probably problem cards in the format interaction becomes a premium, and then wizards uses it as a selling point. Hey there are new 0 cmc interactions, or better board wipes, or new tax or punish effects like Orcish Bowmasters. They are kind of bandaids that aren't anywhere near as needed in other formats because they are much more active in bannings.

Personally, I worry about these new cards, just because I'd much rather play a format with too many problems rather than too many answers. Like, I can think, I should run more artifact removal or something, but I can't think, oh I should not play big spells whenever people might have free counters if there are too many free counters.

wallisface thanks for the feedback. The many 1-ofs is due to taking a starter deck + booster pack and trying to make something from it. Having 1x Orcish Bowmasters is a great example of scoring what appears to be a powerful card from a booster and wanting to use it, but not wanting purchase 3x more of such an expensive card and ultimately build a deck worth $1000.

Based on the overall goal of this deck, do you recommend any 1 mana cards that would fix my mana curve without breaking the bank?

Thanks again!

wallisface on Why Do Some Players Keep …

jethstriker i‘m not convinced that legendaries were ever deliberately made to be more powerful because of their inherent drawback - this feels like something that players would intuitively expect to be the case (because it would make sense), but looking through magics history of the strongest cards in formats, we don’t see that to be true - moderns past is littered with staples like Snapcaster Mage, Tarmogoyf, Death's Shadow, Siege Rhino, Arcbound Ravager, Goblin Guide, Bloodbraid Elf, Stinkweed Imp, Fury, Solitude, and Orcish Bowmasters. Yes there’s stuff like Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer and Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath, but I don’t think there’s enough density/evidence to conclude legendaries are inherently built stronger.

I would also be sceptical of this being the case because it would be weird for Rosewater to be wanting to remove the Legend rule if it served a mechanical purpose

This might be a question for Blogatog?
