Zur the Enchanter on Hexproof

Asked by Anneto 9 years ago

I recently added Zur the Enchanter to one of my decks and while looking at his rules I noticed there is one saying that he can put auras on creatures without targeting them, just to make sure I'm not misunderstanding does that mean you could say Oblivion Ring a card with hexproof. Also what would happen if you did the same to a card with protection from white?

Oblivion Ring is not an Aura. It's a regular enchantment that has a triggered ability that targets something.

Also, one of the details of protection is that an object with protection from [quality] can't be enchanted by anything with that quality. You don't get around this rule.

The ruling (which you should link), is as follows:
7/15/2006: If you use Zur the Enchanter's triggered ability to search for an Aura, it will be put onto the battlefield attached to an appropriate permanent. It doesn't target that permanent. If no appropriate permanent exists for it to be attached to, that Aura can't be put onto the battlefield and stays in your library.

This means that you can enchant a creature that has hexproof or shroud with, say, Temporal Isolation. Or Dead Weight.

Whoops... I read it, realized it said aura, and completely forgot Oblivion Ring isn't an Aura. Thank you though for helping me with the protection bit.

Short answers: No, and the Aura couldn't attach for a different reason.

Long answers:

The reason Zur can stick Auras onto permanents with hexproof or shroud is because of the way Auras work, not because Zur is special. Auras target if they're cast as spells, but if they enter the battlefield any other way, there just needs to be something on the field that they could attach to based on their "Enchant X" line of text. Since this doesn't target, you can choose to put them on a creature with hexproof or shroud.

Oblivion Ring, on the other hand, is an enchantment with an ability that triggers when it enters the battlefield, not an Aura. As such, when it enters the battlefield in any way, and its ability triggers, you can't target something with shroud, or an opponent's creature with hexproof, period.

As for the protection bit, it doesn't matter whether or not the Aura targets, because creatures with protection abilities can't be enchanted by those things either. So, like, a pro-white creature couldn't have a white Aura put onto it in any circumstances. You'd have to pick some other creature to stick your Auras onto.

Hope this helps. It's a tricky bit with Zur and Auras unless you're already pretty well versed in the rules.
