Whip of Erebos *on* Erebos, God?

Asked by MagnusMTG 8 years ago

I just had the best Mono Black Devotion win evar!

I'm pretty sure what I did was legit, but if not, let me know so I don't try it again!

Here's the scenario:

Turn 30 vs Red/Blue Dragons, opponent just attacked with his two 4/4 dragons, bringing me down to 3 life.

In my hand is Drown in Sorrow and Gray Merchant of Asphodel. I have 8 Swamps and Whip of Erebos on the field.

On my turn, I draw a Swamp. The only creature card in my graveyard is Erebos, God of the Dead. I play the Swamp to have 9 mana available, use the Whip to bring back Erebos, then cast Gray Merchant with 5 devotion.

My opponent was at 8 life, so Gary made our life totals switch: now 8 for me, 3 for him. Now with 5 devotion, Erebos is a creature with haste and attacks for the win!

My opponent argued that Erebos wasn't a creature card while in the graveyard, but he clearly is, right? I told him that the "not a creature" ability only functions on the battlefield. That's what I've been told before, anyway.

Legit play for awesome win, or did I do something wrong?

Yes, you are correct. He is a creature everywhere except the battlefield, no matter your devotion. It was totally as legit play.

Always check the Gatherer rulings before posting a question.

9/15/2013: The type-changing ability that can make the God not be a creature functions only on the battlefield. It's always a creature card in other zones, regardless of your devotion to its color.
