When you copy an X spell, does it copy the damage?

Asked by mrfr1day 8 years ago

I will have two examples that need clearing up:

-Crater's Claws

-Rolling Thunder

-Can I choose how I divide the damage again after I copy the spell?

Crater's Claws just deals X damage to one target. Because declarations for X are a copiable value, copies of Crater's Claws will have the same X value as the original.

For Rolling Thunder, we just need to look at the Gatherer rulings:

8/25/2015: If Rolling Thunder is copied, the copy will retain the original damage division. The spell or ability will likely allow you to choose new targets, but you can't change the way damage is divided.

1/ Yes, it copies the crater's claws damage, even the ferocious bit, if you have ferocious when the copy resolves.

2/ Yes to that as well, similar as above.

3/ You can change the targets, if the copy spell allows it but not the division of damage. That is part of casting the spell and copies do not modify things such as modes of casting and damage division.

@Boza: Note that Fork only allows you to change the copy's targets; it doesn't allow you to redeclare the division of anything. You'll be able to select new targets to receive the original distributions of damage, but you can't choose to distribute different quantities of damage to those targets.

@ Epoch, I corrected my answer after realizing I read it wrong. It is quite late here.
