What resolves?

Asked by Wbg1415 2 years ago

Opponent casts Bane of Bala Ged and is typed out. I cast Ceremonious Rejection , my opponent then casts Not of This World , I then cast to counter that spell with Miscast . Then my opponent casts another copy of Not of This World . What resolves?

What a stack!

The stack works on a first in, last out basis.

So the last Not Of resolves first, countering your Miscast . Since Miscast is countered, the first Not Of resolves, countering your Ceremonious Rejection . And because Rejection doesn't resolve, the Bane of Bala Ged resolves.

Bane of Bala Ged does not resolve.

Not of This World cannot counter Ceremonious Rejection . Not of This World can only target a spell or ability that targets a permanent. Bane of Bala Ged is not a permanent if it is still on the stack and being countered by Ceremonious Rejection .

Nice catch I missed that, from the gatherer rulings

6/15/2010 Not of This World’s first ability checks the current state of the targets of the spell or ability it’s targeting to determine whether one of them is a permanent you control. For example, say a player casts Forked Bolt targeting you and a creature you control. If, in response, another spell or ability causes that creature to no longer be under your control, then you can’t cast Not of This World targeting Forked Bolt. Alternately, if you cast Not of This World targeting Forked Bolt and, in response, another spell or ability causes that creature to no longer be under your control, Not of This World won’t resolve when it tries to resolve for having an illegal target.

Basically you can make the logical jump that its not a creature yet, therefore it's not a legal target yet,
