What if two different cards has two different "absolute" abilities conflicting eachother?

Asked by Kjartan 9 years ago

If Godhead of Awe is on the battlefield alongside a card which states all creatures a 2/2s, what does then happen?

Timestamps. Whichever entered most recently overrides the other one. If Godhead came along more recently, then all creatures are 1/1s. If the other card entered more recently, they are 2/2s. (worth noting that Godhead will be a 2/2 regardless of time stamps).

That isn't actually always correct. It depends on what the other card is. I assume that you are talking about Humility in which case all creatures are 1/1s. If it is a different card that doesn't remove abilities then raithe000 is correct.

The way to figure this out is using the layer system. The layer system defines how continuous effects play with each other. The layers are:

Assuming you start with Humility and Godhead of Awe:

Copy: Nothing here

Control: Still nothing here

Text: Nope

Type: Rien

Color: Nada

Abilities: Humility removes all of the abilities from Godhead of Awe.

Power/Toughness: This layer actually has 5 sublayers bu the only one we care about is the p/t setting layer in which all creatures become 1/1s.

As you can see if Godhead of Awe kept its abilities then both its ability and Humility would apply and you would determine which applies in timestamp order. The most recent thing will have the effect.

TL;DR- It's complicated, read the text.

Well that doesn't really have much to do with my question, as it is not a rule but rather a singular cards ability already written on the card, but thank you anyways :)

@Kjartan What do you mean by: " it is not a rule but rather a singular cards ability already written on the card". I'm kinda curious about what you are asking about.

Sorry if I misread your comment, I thought your statement was that Humility's ability would nagate Godhead of Awe's ability, and therefore it doesn't matter which one were to enter the battlefield first.
