What happens when a creature with a trigger changes control?

Asked by Aethaleon 7 years ago

I have Arjun, the Shifting Flame and overload Blustersquall which puts an Arjun trigger on the stack, then I cast Reins of Power putting a second Arjun trigger on the stack. The first trigger resolves as normal, but then Reins of Power resolves, giving my opponent Arjun. Then the second Arjun trigger moves to resolve. What happens? Does it fizzle, resolve for me, or resolve for my opponent instead? I want to think it uses last known information, but I don't know if that's right.

It resolves for you. When an ability is put on the stack, it exists independent of its source and will use the last known information about said source. As control of Arjun is not relevant to the resolution of his ability, it revolves normally.

603.3a A triggered ability is controlled by the player who controlled its source at the time it triggered, unless its a delayed triggered ability.

In this case, the ability will resolve for you, since you controled Arjun when it triggered.

To be clear: "last known information" is used when the game needs to know something about an object that has either left the battlefield or is otherwise missing from the zone it was expected to be in. Arjun hasn't changed zones in this example so LKI doesn't matter. What matters is the rule quoted in Boza's response.
