What happens to a kitesail freebooter that changes but never leaves

Asked by lessmagicmoregathering 5 years ago

If i have a Kitesail Freebooter in play with lets say a Duress under it...irrelevant...and it becomes targeted by a Metamorphic Alteration to turn it into let's say a Llanowar Elves...also irrelevant...anything except the freebooter...what happens to the exiled duress? The freebooter never left the battlefield so i don't know what rulings apply.

Thanks in advance!

I believe the Duress stays in exile until the card that used to be a Kitesail Freebooter leaves the battlefield. This would be different if the Duress was exiled under a Tidehollow Sculler, because the return-the-card ability would never trigger.

It would stay in exile until that card leaves the battlefield.

When a card uses its own name in its rules text it means "this object, right here", and will keep that meaning even if the card somehow changes names. With the way Kitesail Freebooter's triggered ability is written, the duration of the zone-change effect is established as the ability resolves. The effect will end at the appropriate time even if the ability doesn't exist anymore at that time.

Pieguy396: If you aren't sure about an answer to a rules question, do some double-checking so you can be more confident when writing your response. Your response was completely correct, but some people don't feel comfortable taking an "I think" or "I believe" answer to a rules question.

lessmagicmoregathering - in the future, please try to remember to hit the "Mark as Answer" button next to a correct response. This helps keep the Rules Q&A section clutter-free, as well as helps future users with the same question quickly identify the answer.

I've gone ahead and marked Rhadamanthus' post as the accepted answer, as this question has been resolved for a couple days. While Pieguy396 is 100% correct in what happens, I think Rhadamanthus provides a slightly more clear answer as to why this result happens.
