What happens if I sacrifice Mogg Fanatic to play Altar's Reap

Asked by Tarv 8 years ago

Working on a deck idea that kind of depends on whether or not this rule works in my favor or not. Basically if I want to play Altar's Reap and I sacrifice Mogg Fanatic to pay its cost will Mogg Fanatic deal the 1 damage and then I get to draw two cards from Altar's Reap or does the fanatic just die without dealing the one damage?

Thanks

Mogg Fanatic's ability is an activated ability, which means that you need to activate it in order for it to do anything. In order to activate an ability, you announce it, place it onto the stack, make relevant decisions for it, and then pay its costs. No player has priority during this process.

Now, the process for casting a spell is much the same.

You can only cast one spell or activate one ability at a time. Once you begin one process, you lose priority and must complete that process; you can't take other actions in the middle.

So if you choose to cast Altar's Reap, you'll need to pay the cost before you're able to cast another spell or activate Mogg Fanatic's ability. And if you activate Mogg Fanatic's ability, you'll have to sacrifice Mogg Fanatic before you can cast a spell.

tl;dr: You have to choose one; you don't get both.
