Two replacement-effects at the same time? Tainted Remedy + Sulfuric Vortex
Asked by Gaspode 7 years ago
My opponent plays Tainted Remedy and I play Sulfuric Vortex. Both effects replace the effect of gaining life. But what will happen exactly if I gain life?
Does Tainted Remedy cause a loss of Lifepoints or does Sulfuric Vortex prevent Tainted Remedy from doing its job?

Slightly incorrect. When multiple replacement effects attempt to modify an event affecting a permanent or player, that permanent's controller or the affected player decides which replacement effect to apply. Only one of these replacement effects will happen, not both. You can either lose the life instead or not gain it instead.

Don't the enchantments' time stamps factor into this?

No. there's a specific ruling that applies to this scenario:
616.1. If two or more replacement and/or prevention effects are attempting to modify the way an event affects an object or player, the affected objects controller (or its owner if it has no controller) or the affected player chooses one to apply, following the steps listed below. If two or more players have to make these choices at the same time, choices are made in APNAP order (see rule 101.4)

As the affected player, YOU get to decide which replacement effect to apply first.
