Two or More Power/Toughness-Defining Effects

Asked by ZendikariWol 2 years ago

Say I've got a Tarmogoyf that's gained all the abilities of Rubblehulk with... well, I actually can't think of a black-border effect that does this (by design?), but we'll say Grusilda, Monster Masher .

What is the creature's power and toughness? It's Schrodinger's cat as is right?

Well, with Grusilda, Monster Masher specifically, it says that "their power is equal to their total power..."

So your Goyf would have a power equal to the # of card types in all graveyards PLUS all lands you control. (And it's toughness would be equal to that, +1)

(But in general, since both of these are CDA p/t effects, they'd apply in the same layer, so they'd go in Timestamp order. So if you first had your Tarmogoyf on the field, and then somehow also gave it Rubblehulk 's ability in a way that didn't tell you to add them together, the p/t would be equal to the lands you control, as you'd first apply the Goyf's (since it was on the field first) and then overwrite it with the newer CDA ability)

I really appreciate the response but I'm trying to find the answer to a very slightly different question:

Say there is an effect that grants a creature the abilities of each creature in exile with a certain kind of counter on it. Among such creatures are Rubblehulk and Tarmogoyf. What happens then? There would be no matter of recency since neither one is on the battlefield and therefore neither is a permanent, both are permanent cards.

If both effects in the same layer came into effect simultaneously, you would choose the order in which they were applied, at the time that they both first start applying.
