The "can't" part of not being able to "play" spells that's already been cast.

Asked by FALLEN-X-ANGEL 9 years ago

We had a tournament saturday and this situation occurred. I casted an Engineered Explosives for 1 charge counter, and a Gaddock Teeg was being Detention Sphere d. While I was casting the Engineered Explosives , my opponent responded with a Qasali Pridemage , using his ability to destroy my Detention Sphere , and get his Gaddock Teeg back. When he gets his Advisor back does my Engineered Explosives resolve? Or does it not since Gaddock Teeg prevents me from playing it? If it does resolve, may i have the ruling for it, but if it doesn't then my question is answered.

Gaddock Teeg 's relevant ability has been oracled to "Noncreature spells with in their mana cost can't be cast." Since you had already cast the Engineered Explosives before Gaddock Teeg came back into play, I believe it would resolve since Gaddock Teeg never saw the Engineered Explosives being cast.

It does resolve, and you don't need a ruling. You just need to look at the wording.

Gaddock Teeg 's text reads "Noncreature spells with X in their mana costs can't be cast." (Remember that "played" was an old word for casting spells or activating abilities. Played is only used in reference to lands now.)

Because Gaddock Teeg 's ability only prevents those spells from being cast, it doesn't retroactively do anything to interfere with spells that have already been cast (i.e. spells that were cast before Gaddock Teeg entered the battlefield). It's similar to how spells cast before Silence resolves are unaffected.

Thanks Epochalyptik, Wish the judge would've agreed with me.
