Tezzeret targeting itself and becoming impenetrable?

Asked by -Logician 8 years ago

Can I use Liquimetal Coating targeting my Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas, then use his [-1] ability to target itself and become a 5/5 artifact creature, and then enchant him with Inviolability to prevent all damage dealt to him? If my opponent attacks him, does that damage become prevented?

Yes, all damage from all sources is prevented. Inviolability does not care about the type of damage (combat, non-combat, creature-to-creature, etc.)

If you were also curious about the creature part, Tezzeret's ability only cares about if the artifact is an artifact when you activate the ability (in order to even have a target) and when the ability resolves (so it is not countered). Even when the EOT effect of the Liquimetal Coating wears off, Tezzeret's ability has made him a creature 'permanently'. He is also still an artifact because his ability turns him into an artifact creature.

merrowMania Indeed, I knew the second post you made was true. That just makes sense. I just didn't know if damage dealt to planeswalkers was converted into loss of loyalty counters in such a way that damage prevention didn't work. Thanks for your response.

Damage to planeswalkers causes loss of loyalty counters. That's an effect of the damage; it's not a replacement effect or something else that might conflict with a prevention effect.
