Tahngarth and Homeward path interactions

Asked by loki255 4 years ago

I'm curious to know if when Tahngarth, First Mate is under an opponents control attacking a different player will activating Homeward Path , having him return to my control, bring him back to my battlefield still tapped and attacking or will he be removed from combat due to the change in field. Moreover if he still gets to attack whatever opponent he's attacking will I get any "when this creature attacks" triggers to activate, or is there even a gap for me to do that. Last thing, is it possible to get Tahngarth, First Mate to attack me after using Homeward Path to bring it back under my control or do the rules just say no to that.

No, you cannot be attacking outside of your own combat phase ( Party Crasher notwithstanding). If you Homeward Path tahngarth will be considered out of combat.

A creature is removed from combat if:
it leaves play
it regenerates
its controller changes
it stops being a creature
an effect removes it from combat

When a creature is removed from combat, it stops being an attacking, blocking, blocked, and/or unblocked creature.

Creature is also removed from combat, if it phases out.

Additionally, Tahngarth never "attacks" when its ability is used, so it doesn't trigger any "when this creature attacks" abilities at all (unless you're declaring it as an attacker on your turn).

"When [this creature] attacks" means "when [this creature] is declared as an attacker during the Declare Attackers Step of the Combat Phase." Effects that cause a creature to be attacking at any other point during combat don't count, including Tahngarth's ability.
