Static Counterspell with Knowledge Pool

Asked by Decks_On.Acid 8 years ago

I have been looking over the internet for the answer, but it is confusing me a little. I have Erayo's Essence and Knowledge Pool out on the field.

If the first spell of the turn was cast by the opponent, would it be countered and then go to the graveyard, or knowledge pool process happen normally anyhow....?

I think it depends whose turn it is, because they're both triggered effects. So the priority goes Active Player, non active player. As a result, the non-active player's triggered effect, whomever it may be, resolves first. I.e. if they cast a spell during your turn it resolves (into pool), but if they cast a spell during their turn it gets countered

Whenever multiple triggers go on the stack at the same time, they would go on the stack in APNAP order (Active player Non-Active Player (Meaning starting with whoever's turn it is, and moving to each player in turn order)). And if one player controls multiple triggers, that player decides in what order his triggers go on the stack, and therefore in what order he wants them to resolve.

Shakeled would be correct if two separate players controlled the triggers going on the stack at the same time. However, since you control the source of both the triggered abilities, you solely decide in what order they will resolve in. You may have that first spell either be countered and put into the graveyard, or have it be exiled into Knowledge Pool.

If you control both Erayo's Essence (noting that by errata it has a triggered ability rather than a static one) and Knowledge Pool, then since they both trigger at the same time you choose which order they go on the stack in and (by extension) in which order they resolve. So, basically, you could choose whether the first spell is countered or goes through the Knowledge Pool process.

If two different players control the Essence and the Pool, they trigger in "active-player non-active-player" order. The active player (the player whose turn it is) puts their trigger onto the stack first, then the non-active player puts their trigger onto the stack; this means that the non-active player's trigger resolves first, and is ultimately the one which takes precedence in this scenario.

Ah, my bad. I thought that the player who cast the spell controlled the knowledge pool trigger because of the "that player exiles it" clause. Having looked it up, I see that its owned by the knowledge pool. Disregard my original answer.

Also, on a side note:

If you control Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir on the battlefield with a Knowledge Pool, you've succeeded in creating one of the hardest locks in Magic. Little tidbit if you ever consider using Knowledge Pool in a blue deck.
