Soulflayer question

Asked by Hjaltrohir 9 years ago

If I exile Battle Brawler with Soulflayer, does it gain first strike, first strike as long as I control a white or red permanent or does nothing happen.

I'm no pro about explaining card interactions, but my opinion on this is that Battle Brawler doesn't have first strike of his own accord, so Soulflayer won't recieve first strike.

Yep, Battle Brawler has an ability that can give it first strike, but it doesn't have the keyword ability first strike printed on the card, which is all Soulflayer cares about.

I'm a little rusty with CDAs but I believe this is like Tarmogoyf in that Battle Brawler's ability applies anywhere not just on the battlefield.

So as long as you control a red or white permanent Soulflayer will have first strike because Battle Brawler also has it.

No, Tarmogoyf's ability applies everywhere because it is a characteristic-defining ability (rule:604.3). Battle Brawler just has a regular old static ability that only functions on the battlefield. (I'll find the appropriate rule in a sec)

It's the same with Progenitus having Pro everything while still being able to be countered.

Found it: rule 112.6 and it's sub-rules (not copy-pasting cause it's long).

@sonnet666 You are correct. Battle Brawler's ability fails on multiple counts to be a CDA.
