Saffi Eriskdotter vs Pyroclasm & Relic

Asked by shelldell 8 years ago

Hi all, the relevant cards are set up like so:

I'm playing 5c Humans: Saffi Eriksdotter + Huntmaster of the Fells  Flip on the field

Opponent w/ Tron: Pyroclasm in hand, Relic of Progenitus on the field.

[1] Opponent plays pyroclasm
[2] I respond by sac'ing Saffi, targeting Huntmaster
[3] Opponent responds by cracking Relic

My understanding is that the stack would resolve like this:

[1] Saffi goes into the graveyard immediately to pay for her activated ability
[2] Relic cracks, exiles Saffi
[3] Pyroclasm resolves, Huntmaster sent to graveyard
[4] Saffi's ability triggers, Huntmaster returns to the field

Did I do that correctly? Saffi's trigger continues to "exist" for the remainder of the turn even though she was exiled?

Additionally, is there a way my opponent could have correctly loaded the stack to exile Huntmaster before he's returned to the field?

I'm guessing it would look something like:

[1] Pyroclasm played
[2] Saffi sac'd to grave for triggered ability targeting Huntmaster
[3] Both players let pyroclasm resolve, Huntmaster goes into graveyard
[4] Saffi's ability triggers
[5] In response to Saffi's triggered ability, opponent cracks relic
[6] Relic resolves first, exiling Huntmaster & Saffi in graveyard
[7] Saffi's ability resolves second, but fizzles as Huntmaster is no longer in the graveyard

Is that right?

Thank you!

It seems to me you have a solid grasp of what is and can transpire, everything here looks correct to me.

To further elaborate on part of the question, part of the rules state this:

112.7a - Once activated or triggered, an ability exists on the stack independently of its source. Destruction or removal of the source after that time wont affect the ability. Note that some abilities cause a source to do something (for example, Prodigal Pyromancer deals 1 damage to target creature or player) rather than the ability doing anything directly. In these cases, any activated or triggered ability that references information about the source because the effect needs to be divided checks that information when the ability is put onto the stack. Otherwise, it will check that information when it resolves. In both instances, if the source is no longer in the zone its expected to be in at that time, its last known information is used. The source can still perform the action even though it no longer exists.

You are correct on both counts. Because your opponent jumped the gun and cracked Relic of Progenitus in response to Saffi Eriksdotter's activated ability, Huntmaster of the Fells  Flip will be in the graveyard when the delayed trigger set by Saffi's activated ability resolves.

The window of time that Huntmaster of the Fells  Flip spends in the graveyard is between the resolution of Pyroclasm and the resolution of the delayed trigger set by Saffi Eriksdotter's activated ability. In order to make sure that it comes back, your opponent should crack relic in response to the trigger, like you correctly guessed.
