Sacrifice Eldrazi Scion as additional cost

Asked by michalplatek 8 years ago

If I cast Bone Splinters and sacrifice an Eldrazi Scion token creature with "Sacrifice this creature: add 1 to your mana pool" as an additional cost, do I get an additional mana from the token's ability?

You don't because Bone Splinters has you sacrifice the creature as a cost, therefore you can't respond to it by sacrificing the scion because it needs a sacrifice to be cast. If Bone Splinters was worded so that your creature dying was an effect, not a cost, then you would be able to sac it in response.

You can't use one action or one payment to satisfy two costs.

In this case, both Bone Splinters and the Scion's ability have costs that involve sacrificing the Scion. You can either pay for Bone Splinters's additional cost by sacrificing the Scion or you can activate Scion's ability. You can't do both because you can only pay for one of them.

If the ability in question weren't a mana ability (let's say you want to activate Mogg Fanatic's ability) you'd have the additional issue of having to choose whether to annnounce the spell or the ability. Once you're in the process of casting a spell, activating an ability, or handling a triggered ability, you can't announce other spells and abilities because you no longer have priority.
