Sacrifice Arcbound Ravager

Asked by Liszt 9 years ago

Can I sacrifice Arcbound Ravager? And what will happen then? Let's say I have an Arcbound Ravager with 3 counters and a Memnite in play. Can I sac Arcbound to put 3 counters on my memnite? I think the 4th will disappear even if I can do that.

You can sacrifice ravager to its own ability. It will go the graveyard and the modular ability will trigger. The modular ability will be put on the stack above the sac an artifact activated ability resolve first.

You will then put 3 counters on a target artifact creature you control. Lastly, the activated ability will try to resolve, but it has nothing to put counters on, so it does nothing.

You may sacrifice Arcbound Ravager by using it's own ability, yes. You will only get the counters already on it - in your example 3.

Keep in mind that if someone destroys your Memnite in response, Your Ravager and your counters will be gone - assuming you aren't willing to put them on an opponent's artifact creature.

@BlueScope: The target for a triggered ability is chosen at the same time it's put onto the stack, and Modular triggers when Arcbound Ravager dies. If the Memnite is killed in response then the target can't be changed. Contrast this with Bolster, which doesn't have a target, in which case the creature is chosen as the ability resolves.

@Rhadamanthus: I was aware of what you said, but under the impression that activating the ability of the Ravager gives priority to players to respond to that before Modular goes on the stack (as sacrificing the Ravager is not triggering the Modular ability in itself, but paying the cost for it is).
I suppose the Modular ability goes on the stack immediately after you activate/pay for the Ravager's ability, then... I didn't think this through entirely :)

Right, a triggered ability will trigger whenever the appropriate event happens, but then it's put onto the stack the next time a player gets priority. Modular will be on the stack when it's time to make responses to activating Ravager's ability.
