Rubinia + Bribery (EDH Question)

Asked by iamnickhansen 9 years ago

If Player A attacks Player B with Silent-Blade Oni and from the combat damage trigger casts Kozilek, Butcher of Truth , then Player C takes Kozilek, Butcher of Truth with Rubinia Soulsinger , who gains control of Kozilek, Butcher of Truth when Rubinia Soulsinger becomes untapped or leaves play?

My understanding is that it would be Player A (the player who cast Kozilek, Butcher of Truth ), not Player B (the player who actually owns Kozilek, Butcher of Truth ) since Rubinia Soulsinger does not specify "return to owner" and instead states that Player C just loses control.

Thanks in advance for your help with this question!

I meant to change the title to Rubinia + Silent-Blade Oni.

You are correct. Player A was the controller of Kozilek, Butcher of Truth before Rubinia Soulsinger gave Player C control of Kozilek, Butcher of Truth . Because Rubinia Soulsinger 's ability describes a control change effect with a set duration and gives no instructions for what to do with the card afterward, control reverts to the permanent's previous controller (Player A) when the control effect ends.

Out of curiosity, what happens if Player A leaves the game, and then rubinia leaves play?

@rowcla: It's exiled.

800.4c If an effect that gives a player still in the game control of an object ends, there is no other effect giving control of that object to another player in the game, and the object entered the battlefield under the control of a player who has left the game, the object is exiled. This is not a state-based action. It happens as soon as the control-changing effect ends.
