Rings of Brighthearth and Chandra, the Firebrand

Asked by MaksWell42 9 years ago

I know that it is possible to do, I'm just curious about timing of paying for what I want to happen. Say I have a Chandra, the Firebrand and a Rings of Brighthearth. I want to cast Master the Way as many times as possible because I also control a Reliquary Tower and have a large hand. Do I -2 Chandra then pay 2 colorless for the Rings to copy the delayed ability then play Master the Way? How many times does the spell resolve? I'm pretty sure it would be 3. Thanks for your time.

The spell will be on the stack three times (two will be copies).

Chandra, the Firebrand's second ability is a delayed trigger. First, activating Chandra then respond by activating the Rings to copy her ability before it resolves. When you cast Master the Way after that, Chandra's triggers will go onto the stack - one will resolve, put a copy of Master The Way on the stack, which resolves. Then the other trigger resolves, and its copied spell resolves. Then the original spell resolves.

So if you have hand size X to start, you will deal X damage the first time (because you draw a card to replace the cast spell) then X+1, then X+2, assuming no other spells or effects.

Nitpick: you don't activate Rings. It has a triggered ability that triggers whenever you activate an ability. You just decide whether to pay when the ability resolves.

Thank you for the nitpick, they're important to me, as well.

So for clarification, Chandra's is an activated ability which causes a delayed trigger ability which is copied by the Rings' triggered optional ability all of which trigger with the casting of a spell cast at sorcery speed...?

I'm not sure I understand that last question, but I think the answer is Yes (?).

Chandra's ability is activated, and Rings triggers when you activate an ability. Both the copy of Chandra's ability and the original one will create a delayed trigger as they resolve and that delayed trigger waits for you to cast an instant or sorcery. When you do cast an instant or sorcery, both delayed triggers will trigger.

Apologies for the rhetorical question. I was just pointing out that the combo requires a slightly long winded and confusing set of triggers and abilities, which is one of the best things about magic.
