Rhys and tokens that self exile

Asked by wereotter 5 years ago

I feel like I often get this wrong, so thought I'd get a broader player base to answer this:

For this example, if I play Lightning Coils in a commander deck headed by Rhys the Redeemed , and the artifact creates elemental tokens for me, it's my understanding that any token doubling effect like Parallel Lives would tell the artifact to make more tokens, and all the tokens would exile at the end of turn.

However, if I activate Rhys, or cast a spell like Second Harvest after they're already in play, it's my assumption that since the Lightning Coils didn't make those tokens, it doesn't see them to make them be exiled at the end of turn. Is this correct, or do all the tokens exile regardless of who made them?

tokens not created by Lightning Coils will not be exiled by Lightning Coils

Lightning Coils creates a delayed trigger that exiles the tokens at the beginning of the next end step. Per rule 706.2, when you copy an object, it only acquires the copiable values of the original object, which are: name, mana cost, color indicator, card type, subtype, supertype, rules text, power, toughness, and/or loyalty, as modified by a certain set of clearly deliniated effects.

Since delayed triggers on the creature are not copiable values, they are not copied. As such, the newly-created tokens will not be subject to the delayed trigger.

Thank you! I thought I understood this correctly, but often was told I got it wrong when I looked at various effects like this.
