Question about Imp's Mischief and Counterspells

Asked by Pilz_753 9 years ago

I cast Stronghold Assassin in response my opponent casts Counterspell to counter it. In response I cast Dismember on my opponent's Kalonian Hydra and use Imp's Mischief to change the target of Counterspell to Dismember . My question now is does the Dismember resolve? Originally the Dismember is on the stack above Counterspell so it should, but does Imp's Mischief somehow changes the order of spells on the stack?

At that point you have Stronghold Assassin Counterspell Dismember and Imp's Mischief on the stack. They resolve as:

Imp's Mischief resolves and changes the target of Counterspell to Dismember

Dismember resolves giving the hydra -5/-5

Counterspell tries to resolve, but its target Dismember no longer exists, so it fizzles

Stronghold Assassin resolves.

FYI, a simpler way to do this trick is to change the target of Counterspell to Imp's Mischief .

For the record, nothing (yet) changes the order of spells or abilities on the stack.
