Panharmonicon, restoration angel, tidehollow sculler interaction.

Asked by zyvox 7 years ago

So lets say I have an empty Tidehollow Sculler on the battlefield with a Panharmonicon in play. If I target the sculler with a Restoration Angel what order do the ETB go on? Does restoration angel trigger twice before tidehollow sculler?

As a follow up, if restoration angel triggers twice before sculler's ETB, can the restoration angel target the sculler twice causing 2 cards to be permanently exiled and two temporarily? (similar to targeting a Tidehollow Sculler with Cloudshift as it enters the battlefield)

No.

Restoration Angel's ability will trigger twice and go on the stack, each having a target chosen for it.

  1. Reston will trigger twice. The first iteration will resolve, triggering Tidehollow Sculler's LTB ability and ETB ability. You choose which ability goes on the stack first but it's not important for that.

  2. When you flicker Sculler from the first resolution, the second resolution will fizzle because its target is no longer legal. (sculler is a new entity).

Alright, so what if you target a single Wall of Omens with a Panharmonicon in play? If you can choose the order, can you use the second Restoration Angel trigger to target the new wall of omens? (and draw four cards?)

No. the targets must be chosen as the abilities go on the stack.

When Resto ETB's, her ability triggers two times. You decide in what order they go on the stack, and all targets are immediately chosen.

If you target Wall of Omens with both of them, and the first Resto Angel ETB trigger resolves, that Wall of Omens is no longer the same permanent that was targeted with the second ETB trigger. Therefore, the second trigger is removed from the stack for lack of legal target. You will only draw 2 cards.

Raging_Squiggle Doesn't the second Restoration Angel trigger resolve first?

First trigger on stack >>

Second trigger on stack >>

Second trigger resolves >>

First trigger resolves.

In answer to the second question, yes, except for the part about blinking Tidehollow Sculler Twice. Sculler will enter the battlefield, triggering it's ETB twice. In response you can Resto to blink it, triggering it's exit effect and retriggering it's ETB twice. You then resolve the 3rd and 4th ETB choosing 2 cards to temporarily exile, then resolve the 1st and 2nd choosing 2 cards to permanently exile. This chain of events is entirely compulsory, so if they only have 2 cards in hand, they have to be put in temporary exile, not permanent. Also, none of this required Resto triggering twice, only Tidehollow, so it's exactly like using Cloudshift with Panharmonicon.
