Ninjutsu - Nameless Inversion Question

Asked by MoJoMiXuP 8 years ago

Hey Tappity Tappers,

I've a ninjutsu deck with Nameless Inversion in the SB, but I'm considering moving it to the MB if the following interaction works:

Combat phase:

1) Ornithopter or other little evasive prick declared attacker.

2) No blocker declared.

3) Activate ninjutsu on Ninja of the Deep Hours and swap out Ornithopter

4) During combat damage step, cast Nameless Inversion on Ninja of the Deep Hours to turn it to a 5/0.

Question: Will the 5 hit and the triggered ability draw happen even though it's toughness is 0? I'm thinking yes, but its a bit iffy and I could use a judge or other know-how Magic players to confirm for me.

Thanks!

State-based actions are responsible for killing your creatures if their toughness is 0 or lower, and they're checked every time after a spell or ability resolves, or a player would receive priority (as well as other instances). The game won't move on until the next step (in your example the combat damage step) before the previous phase (in your case the declare blockers step) is over, and resolving Nameless Inversion along with dealing with it's effects happens all in that phase, killing your creature well before it could deal damage, or anyone could even cast or activate anything.

Oh, also, the last chance for you to cast Nameless Inversion before dealing combat damage is in the declare blockers step - but even if there was an opportunity to do so in the combat damage step, it wouldn't make a difference, as state-based actions are checked one way or another.

Players don't get a chance to cast spells or activate abilities in the Combat Damage Step before combat damage is dealt. You would have to cast Nameless Inversion in the Declare Blockers Step, and then your Ninja would die when State Based Actions are checked.

510.1. First, the active player announces how each attacking creature assigns its combat damage, then the defending player announces how each blocking creature assigns its combat damage. This turn-based action doesnt use the stack. [...]

510.2. Second, all combat damage thats been assigned is dealt simultaneously. This turn-based action doesnt use the stack. No player has the chance to cast spells or activate abilities between the time combat damage is assigned and the time its dealt. This is a change from previous rules.

510.3. Third, any abilities that triggered on damage being assigned or dealt go on the stack.

510.4. Fourth, the active player gets priority. Players may cast spells and activate abilities.
