Mizzix w/ zero EXP counters + proliferate spell

Asked by ShinakoX2 6 years ago

If I have a Mizzix of the Izmagnus with no experience counters from her ability, and then I cast a spell with Proliferate (such as Steady Progress), how many experience counters will I have after the stack resolves?

I'm asking because Proliferate can only duplicate a counter if there is a counter in the first place. So which effect will resolve first: Mizzix's ability off of casting the spell, or the Proliferate effect as the spell resolves?

You'll have 2 experience counters.

A spell is officially "cast" after you finish paying all its costs. This means in your example Mizzix of the Izmagnus will trigger when you cast Steady Progress, that trigger will be put onto the stack on top of Steady Progress, and you'll get an experience counter from the trigger before Steady Progress starts resolving and tells you to proliferate.

How it will work is you'll cast Steady Progress triggering Mizzix of the Izmagnus' ability to trigger. The trigger will be placed on the stack above Steady Progress and resolve first. Then, when Steady Progress resolves you'll be able to choose any number of creatures and/or players with counters on them, and for each object chosen add one counter of a type that object already has on it. In this case I assume you'll ignore the experience counter and add an energy counter (you have an Aether Hub, right?), but I guess you could end up with 2 experience counters if you really wanted.
