Is it possible to cast Bile Blight to kill a creature when my opponent is about to give it Mardu Runemark.

Asked by nunuru 9 years ago

My opponent has a Carrion Crow, and he is about to cast Mardu Runemark on it, but i respond by casting Bile Blight.

What happens, will the creature die or will it end up being a 1/1 Carrion Crow until the end of turn?

I'm curious to know what you mean by "about to cast." You can't cut someone off from casting something. Once a player announces a spell, he or she executes the casting process. Players regain priority afterward. You can, however, respond to Mardu Runemark or just cast Bile Blight in the upkeep or something before your opponent has the option to cast Mardu Runemark.

Anyway, it will die. Bile Blight will resolve first, and Carrion Crow will only be a 2/2 at that time. It will go to -1/-1, and it will be put into its owner's graveyard as a state-based action. If you responded to Mardu Runemark, then Mardu Runemark will be countered on resolution because its target is now illegal.

The Carrion Crow will die as the Mardu Runemark will be on the stack and when you respond with Bile Blight, the Carrion Crow will get -3/-3 and it will die. Afterwards Mardu Runemark will get countered as it no longer has a legal target while it's on the stack.
