If I copy a creature with Blade of Selves equipped to the creature, does the copy get the Myriad ability?

Asked by JoyTheEnbySliverLover 2 years ago

Hey, I'm having a moment of doubt about the ruling on this and if it will work or not.

The question is pretty self explanatory (I think so at least) but I'll at least give an example to make sure it is 100% clear.

So if I control say a Child of Night equipped with Blade of Selves and I have Clone enter the battlefield as a copy Child of Night, would the Clone have Blade of Selves' Myriad ability?

I only ask because the wording on Blade of Selves says:

"Equipped creature has myriad"

Which sounds like the creature has the ability and is a copyable ability of the creature, right?

I hope someone can shed light on this and alleviate my confusion.

It is not a copyable ability, as it is being granted by the equipment. Likewise, clone cards don't copy abilities granted through Auras.

As a rule of thumb, clones only copy what is written on the card of the permanent that they are copying, unless that permanent entered the battlefield with altered characteristics. IE a Sakashima's Protege copying a face-down card from Yedora, Grave Gardener will result in a Sakashima's Protege Forest, and a clone that enters the battlefield as a copy of a Quicksilver Gargantuan that in turn is a copy of a... Wood Elves will also enter as a 7/7 Wood Elves.

Someone will likely explain better and quote the appropriate rulings, but there it is if you wanted the quick & dirty version.

Hi Yesterday,

Thanks for your input and answer to my question.

I originally thought that the ability wouldn't be copied but I doubted myself and I talked myself into believing that the creature might have gain the ability and would then the ability would be able to be copied. Guess my original assumption was correct all along. Never mind though, I guess.

Hope you have a nice day or night.

Sincerely,

Relevant rule for reference:

707.2. When copying an object, the copy acquires the copiable values of the original object’s characteristics and, for an object on the stack, choices made when casting or activating it (mode, targets, the value of X, whether it was kicked, how it will affect multiple targets, and so on). The copiable values are the values derived from the text printed on the object (that text being name, mana cost, color indicator, card type, subtype, supertype, rules text, power, toughness, and/or loyalty), as modified by other copy effects, by its face-down status, and by “as . . . enters the battlefield” and “as . . . is turned face up” abilities that set power and toughness (and may also set additional characteristics). Other effects (including type-changing and text-changing effects), status, and counters are not copied.
