How many creatures can I get with Teneb, the Harvester?

Asked by uth_matar 7 years ago

I attack with both Nicol Bolas and Teneb, the Harvester, and I give Teneb double strike with Psychotic Fury. Both creatures hit my opponent and they discard 3 creatures. How many of the discarded creatures can I put into play using Teneb?

Zero. When the creatures deal combat damage to the defending player, you put both triggers onto the stack. This means you have to choose targets, and you have to do so before Bolas's ability resolves. Therefore, none of those creatures will be in the yard when you declare targets. And Bolas will not have even dealt damage when Teneb hits during the first combat damage step (with double strike).

If Nicol Bolas has first strike (or double strike) that number skyrockets to 'one.' The regular combat damage of Teneb, the Harvester will be able to target cards discarded by the first strike damage. Also, the target of Teneb's ability is chosen when it's put on the stack (which is why it can't target things discarded by Nicol Bolas), but the payment isn't made until it resolves, so if the creature leaves the graveyard the ability is countered and you don't pay for things you don't reanimate.
