How does wither interact with undying?

Asked by sholeton 7 years ago

My question is, if I bring back a creature with undying, then it takes wither damage, does it loose that +1/+1 counter from undying? Does wither cancel out the effect of undying?

Yes, it does. Whenever a creature with a +1/+1 counter gets a -1/-1 counter, they cancel out and cease to exist. This is a state based action so it just happens.

Note that if the damage dealt from wither is enough to kill it, it will not come back to the battlefield because at the time it died it had both a +1/+1 counter and a -1/-1 counter on it.

This is because a creature dying from 0 toughness is also a state based action, and they happen together. Undying checks the last known info of the creature and sees it had a +1 counter so it won't trigger.
