How does Ashaya, Soul of the Wild affect creatures entering the battlefield?

Asked by Be_Jamin 1 year ago

(This is a landfall deck)

Example- Ashaya, Soul of the Wild is on the battlefield, I then tap mana and cast Avenger of Zendikar. This is done before I play any lands this turn. In my hand I have Gruul Turf and play it. Am I able bounce Avenger of Zendikar to my hand and recast given I have enough mana to do so?

I also have another question regarding Ashaya, Soul of the Wild. Do creatures in my graveyard count as land creatures or is that outside of my control? Really what zones count as "my control."

Since Avenger of Zendikar counts as a (Forest) land when Ashaya, Soul of the Wild is in play, it can be returned with Gruul Turf.

The only zone that has permanents "you control" is the battlefield. Compare Ashaya's wording to Arcane Adaptation, for example.

Thank you. I am still a little confused with the second question due to Ashaya's ruling that says "The ability that defines Ashaya's power and toughness applies in all zones, not just the battlefield." While the card reads "Ashaya, Soul of the Wild's power and toughness are each equal to the number of lands you control." Am I just misreading that or is there a conflict there?

Ashaya's first ability is a CDA (Characteristic-defining ability), since it defines something about Ashaya that could be found printed on a normal card (Power/toughness in this case). Rule 604.3 makes CDAs apply in all zones.

Ashaya's second ability is not a CDA, so only applies while she's on the field, where it works as previously noted.

"Lands you control" refers to lands that are on the battlefield that you control. There are actually two reasons for this.

  1. When referring to a game object something being called by type alone is a permanent on the battlefield. On the stack game objects are called "TYPE spells". In all other zones they are "TYPE cards".

  2. Players only "control" permanents on the battlefield and spells on the stack. In all other zones cards that started in your deck are referred to as cards you "own".

Ashaya, Soul of the Wild's first ability is a characteristic defining ability (CDA) and functions in all zones. This means that if you have a Reveillark LTB to resolve you could return Ashaya from the graveyard if you have 2 or less lands on the battlefield, but not if you have 3 or more lands on the battlefield. There is no conflict, an ability that works in all zones simply references the number of lands on the battlefield.
